This is an unpopular opinion: I think Rarity is the only character that is actually subversive and different than the norm, the rest of the MLP cast is very typecast-y and not very original.

Rarity is the type whom most people expect to hate. But instead, her characterization appears to be one of the most solid in the series.

I dunno, an argument could be made for Dash being above and beyond the standard Abrasive Jock character template with her egghead fondness for adventure stories and love of Tank, and Pinkie’s, uh, repressed childhood snapcase self is pretty nonstandard for the Wacky Funster archetype.

The thing that really impresses me about this fandom and R34 is how willing we are overall to voluntarily keep all that carefully segregated from General Audiences content; there are a lot more Pony artists out there who have separate blogs/accounts for their porn art to keep it away from their regular content than is the case in most fandoms, and I’ve always appreciated how aggressively Derpibooru polices Rule #7 and responds to violations of it. Adult material should always be available, but in as adults-only a manner as reasonably possible.

Well, we are also quite organized.  
I know right? One of the kinkiest fandoms out there. Also one of the safest. We manage to maintain a balance most fandoms can only dream of doing. Most fandoms are either negligent, or iron tight sterile.  
We’re the most voluntary fandom out there.

It’s quite a shame that many fans don’t pick up on this and just give her a bunch of crap. Then again, I really didn’t start seeing the brilliance of Rare’s character until about 2014 and once I re-watched past episodes of her from the earlier seasons. So I was one of those “guys” originally that saw her for the wrong reasons. Glad I’m not anymore.

Rarity was actually the first character I considered a favorite of mine. In part because (as a person who considers himself thoroughly uncreative) I admire those who can bring their imaginings to life like she does, but I also think she has a lot of depth that goes unexplored.
 
Case and point, I was thinking recently about one of the first episodes she has a significant role in, season one’s “Look Before You Sleep”. When it first came out, I thought it was an OK episode. Good moral, amusing shenanigans… that sort of thing. But when I began thinking about it again, with the benefit of an additional 4 seasons to draw on, I began to see some subtleties that, while probably unintentional, change a way a lot of the episode looks. For instance, I always found it a bit odd that Applejack and Rarity would be at each other’s throat as much as they were, especially considering that only a few episodes earlier they had joined with the group to literally save Equestria. Yet when we remember that Applejack had once lived in the big city as a filly (which she left because it didn’t feel like home), and recall her disdain for the somewhat vapid interests of the upper class types she basically lived with at that time, it’s easy to imagine that Rarity (with her carefully cultivated accent and dreams of sophistication and glamour) remind Applejack of those self important ponies she didn’t like. And as for why Rarity would be at odds with Applejack herself, I feel like it is because (again, as we later learn) Rarity’s dream is to be a trendsetter. The type that others look to for guidance. A pony everypony should know. And Applejack, in Ponyville, is exactly that. Indeed, the first episode after the series pilot had the Ponyville mayor literally holding a ceremony to honor AJ, and many of the other episodes of season one are all about Rarity trying to get ahead, only to have it backfire on her (Fluttershy’s modeling career, the Gala dress incident, and so on).
 
So at that point it is possible to imagine that the scenario is far more than a simple disagreement over cleaning, but actually issues with Applejack sees Rarity, and how Rarity compares herself to Applejack. And fittingly, the episode solution works that way as well. The problem is ultimately resolved by Applejack revealing to Rarity that she isn’t always able to fix things on her own, and Rarity showing Applejack that she would help, unlike the Canterlot/Manehattan types AJ believed her to be like.

I always thought Rarity was genuinely impressed that Applejack– stubbornest hardhead in Ponyville– was the one to put her ego aside and apologize first, and that fact swayed her towards cooperation at least as much as the rationality of AJ’s plan.

This season really made me dislike pinks.

Rarity is my least favorite of the mane six. She’s practically the embodiment of all the annoying aspects of my mom. I find people who obsess over fashion to be a major turn-off and Rarity is just the type of pony that does that. What’s even worse is how she actually polices it and I found it very annoying in the scene in Made in Manehattan with the ponies wearing the hats. If I had been one of those ponies she approached, I would’ve said “Fuck you I wear whatever the hell I want, now piss off”.
 
Then there’s the whole neat-freak side of her, which is exemplified in Look Before You Sleep; when I saw that episode, I was practically watching my mom interact with Applejack. That upper-classiness to her is just too grating sometimes.
 
I sound like I’m bashing the hell out of her but I’m only giving reasons why she’s my least favorite, not my most hated. I know there are some good things about her character and she’s the element of generosity for a reason. She does great whenever she interacts with Spike and it’s why I’m a Sparity fan (although I do think she takes advantage of him a little too much). One other thing I like about her is that she’s the only one in the mane six who actually shows any amount of horniness to anyone else. She’s the only one whose character comes with love and attraction.
 
Rarity annoys the fuck out of me sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I overlook her redeeming traits.

Funnily enough, this had the opposite of the intended effect back near the beginning of the fandom. Someone would stumble upon a porn-only account, meant only to keep it separated from the SFW art, but they didn’t know that, all they saw was porn. Porn, porn, and more porn. They would be forgiven for thinking that’s all the artist did, especially if they didn’t stay long enough to see there’s almost always a link going back to the artist’s SFW art.

Always found the “THIS CHARACTER HAS SOME ASPECTS THAT REMIND ME OF SOMEONE I DON’T LIKE” to be a sham, honestly.
 
These characters are written with such general virtues and flaws that something along the lines of the Barnum Effect can take place with them. I’m pretty certain you could find things to remind you of someone who pisses you off in any of these characters if you looked hard enough.
 
‘Tis why I try to refrain from real-world comparisons myself. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to even enjoy the show at all.

I see where he’s coming from though. If you dislike someone in your family, you tend to dislike them even more than if they were just a friend or a coworker, because they’re your family and you’re supposed to love them, but can’t for whatever reason, and that just makes the dislike worse.

Whoa now, I never said I disliked my mom. I love my mom. My post specifically said “annoying aspects of my mom”, meaning only that which annoys me about her, but it in no way means I dislike her.
 
Perhaps I was better off leaving out any mention of my mom in my post. I just don’t like that Rarity’s the fashionista type who thinks she’s the authority on what other ponies should wear.

and i would say that having enough knowledge of something to make a living from it/gain a decent amount of fame for it is enough to make someone an authority on the subject

I think he meant that Rarity was less “let me show tips on how to…” and more like “your wardrobe is sht let me dress you up in what I think looks good on you”.

dont see an issue with the latter myself, prefer blunt honesty instead of dressing things up to sound nice
