When Luna gets a manecut...

what happens? Her aetheral locks must be somewhat unstable without its host, and if they do happen to remain in their form, are they valuable? I’m imagining luna donating some of her cut hair so people can have starry wigs!
 
I am aware this thread is somewhat random with no purpose other than speculation. But it’ll be fun :P

I always thought that the astral manes they have are just enchantments. They just turn them off on non-royal business or getting a mane styling.

Luna herself doesn’t cut it. She just wills it into shape. When someone or something else manages to cut her mane, it just dissipates into colored light and shadows.
 
Same deal with Celestia.

I’m assuming that their manes work on the same principles of the Crystal ponies, in that (as others have said) they are controlled and maintained via magic

I assume that once an alicorn achieves an ethereal mane, it’s mane isn’t solid anymore. So trying to cut it will either fail, or the cut of parts would just sublimate out of sight.

Oddly enough, we know that the ethereal manes are solid. Aside from the fact that Nightmare Moon touched ponies with her mane, Pip was able to grab Luna’s mane.
