Why is it so hard to get people to try watching the show?

No seriously, some people are outright ridiculous if you suggest them watch the show. It’s like people act like if they watch a episode or two some homeless person will pop out of hammer space and shank them with a spoon or something.

If you were one of the people fanatically opposed to even watching the show before you gave it a try what convinced you to watch the show?

There are three topics one must never discuss online outside of dedicated threads: Politics, Religion, and My Little Pony.

Yeah, it’s crazy when you run into people who say they would rather slit their throats rather than watch a episode.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

It's a cartoon show!
It’s just because it’s My Little Pony. People automatically get pictures Girly Gala Gunk when you mention the show due to the prior generations of the show. I’m not saying FIM is not at all Girly itself but it’s the stigma that past Generations carry with them.

My brother just hates the hype, it seems, and he doesn’t like the girlishness.
A friend of mine says she just doesn’t like it’s cutesy looks and would watch it if it was humanized.

Though I’m sure these are just cheap excuses, and they are just embarrassed to watch it because of the bad reputation of the former generations.

I believe it’s because most people don’t like getting into new things if it will affect their daily life. People fear change.

Some people do have a general understanding of what they do, or don’t, like. Believe me, it’s a crazy concept but hear me out. My Little Pony has 4 major aspects to it.

  1. Characters; the talking animals. This is a big annoyance to some, people might dislike it on this aspect alone. They very well could know this and not want to waste time.

  2. Style; it’s a ‘pretty’ and ‘kid-friendly’ looking show. It’s not girly or childish, but it certainly is the words I used before. Perhaps this isn’t their style, maybe it can seem like they’re idiots without a range of tastes but you making that assumption and being a prick about them not watching it makes you the badguy. If you do, that is.

  3. Animation; it’s a cartoon. Yes, some people don’t like cartoons. Some people don’t like anime. I consider anime and cartoons the same thing, but that’s beside the point. They very well may not like cartoons.

  4. Fandom; some of it crosses boundaries that others don’t like. There’s a huge intersect with some of the lesser liked internet groups, incidental or not, and this will drive people away. Reason being, the parts of this (and those) fandom is the obnoxious twits that can be there. What do I mean? “You should watch the show!” no “Come on, it’s good!” no “You’re missing out” no “You’re just afraid” no “Scared you’ll like a show for girls?” STOP PESTERING ME!

While not the bulk, this is what people see out there. Same with fandoms like Sonic or furries. The world sees the annoying/obnoxious ones, be it; “Look at me! Look at me!” types who can’t keep it in their private time (sexualizing it is optional but definitely not unrelated), “Look at me, I’m this and I’m obviously normal” who can’t shut up about liking it but still being a normal person, or the ones who join in on the discussions brought up by groups 1 and 2 that make it seem that the fandom is ENTIRELY about that.

The minor aspects are what the content of the show; the comedy, music, and so forth. These are all case-by-case situations and even once you get someone to try the show it may not be their taste. It’s a good cartoon, but just because the lot of us like it doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

It think we do suffer from a lack of perspective. We’re all so deep into it we forget why it’s so strange to like this show in the first place.

It’s freaking My Little Pony.

That’s something many people will never get past.

Also, they may be scared they’ll end up liking it and get absorbed into the cult.

I think most of the reason has to be the stigma behind bronies, which is mostly seen as negative by the average person. I imagine the first thing when people hear the word brony are stereotypical, socially awkward nerds that have an unhealthy obsession with MLP.
And or the show being seen as too “girly”.
