Some people do have a general understanding of what they do, or don’t, like. Believe me, it’s a crazy concept but hear me out. My Little Pony has 4 major aspects to it.
- Characters; the talking animals. This is a big annoyance to some, people might dislike it on this aspect alone. They very well could know this and not want to waste time.
- Style; it’s a ‘pretty’ and ‘kid-friendly’ looking show. It’s not girly or childish, but it certainly is the words I used before. Perhaps this isn’t their style, maybe it can seem like they’re idiots without a range of tastes but you making that assumption and being a prick about them not watching it makes you the badguy. If you do, that is.
- Animation; it’s a cartoon. Yes, some people don’t like cartoons. Some people don’t like anime. I consider anime and cartoons the same thing, but that’s beside the point. They very well may not like cartoons.
- Fandom; some of it crosses boundaries that others don’t like. There’s a huge intersect with some of the lesser liked internet groups, incidental or not, and this will drive people away. Reason being, the parts of this (and those) fandom is the obnoxious twits that can be there. What do I mean? “You should watch the show!” no “Come on, it’s good!” no “You’re missing out” no “You’re just afraid” no “Scared you’ll like a show for girls?” STOP PESTERING ME!
While not the bulk, this is what people see out there. Same with fandoms like Sonic or furries. The world sees the annoying/obnoxious ones, be it; “Look at me! Look at me!” types who can’t keep it in their private time (sexualizing it is optional but definitely not unrelated), “Look at me, I’m this and I’m obviously normal” who can’t shut up about liking it but still being a normal person, or the ones who join in on the discussions brought up by groups 1 and 2 that make it seem that the fandom is ENTIRELY about that.
The minor aspects are what the content of the show; the comedy, music, and so forth. These are all case-by-case situations and even once you get someone to try the show it may not be their taste. It’s a good cartoon, but just because the lot of us like it doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.
