Links with non-alphanumeric characters other than spaces and brackets don’t work properly with whatever URL parser the site uses, some of them terminate the link early, for example. Namby-Pamby is also completely inaccessible and can only be accessed via tag searches or clicking the tag on an existing image.

Yeah, certain characters have to be spelled out.
 
It’s often quite useful to search for a name and then see what the URL of the corresponding tag looks like. For example, if you search for Ms. Malus and then hover the mouse cursor over the name tag, you’ll see that the significant portion is: ms-dot-+malus. The link Ms. Malus works.
 
So you have things like -dot- for a dot, -dash- for a dash, -fwslash- for a slash and so forth. Brackets, however, stay brackets (()).
