Some people have suggested that I’m jumping the gun a little by judging it solely by its animation style, but honestly, the fact that seeing that art style made me instantly think of that type of adult cartoon (so in other words, 99% of adult cartoons made in the West) is a big red flag.

Well, that art style was gonna be the one for a ST cartoon, if only because here in the west that’s seen as the standard for the adult cartoon. It’ll be humor based, so something different.

But then again it’s CBS all-access, fuck that…

something about the lgbt rep and sinking ships that were never going to happen in the first place.

That’s their go-to for every single IP they know about.

Voyager is a big step back from DS9. It has its moments, not many though.

Discovery is absolute shit, it’s trying so very hard to be topical about current politics and its not all subtle about it.

Good writers are flexible. Ehasz wrote for Futurama before he went for more dramatic stuff.

Voyager had quite a few really great episodes. IMO, the show took a big leap in quality with the addition of Seven of Nine in the main cast. I agree that it did have a lot of really bad episodes, though; for example, it gave us “Threshold,” which is probably the worst episode in Star Trek history (and the one that Voyager haters always like to bring up as proof that it sucks–because as we know, judging a show by its worst episode is totally okay!)

Discovery bothers me for a number of reasons. One of them being, incidentally, an issue that I have with what we’ve seen of the new animated show: The cast is mostly human-centric. We have an entire realm of possibilities, yet all but one of the characters are human? SMH.

Huh, really? Aaron Ehasz used to be a writer for Futurama? Interesting…

My problem with Voyager wasn’t individual episodes. It was how the show was broadly written. They were definitely trying to capture the Next Generation vibe, Seven was basically Data, only more bitchy and super hot.

Janeway had no direction as a character, sometimes they’d write her as a Picard-like diplomat but then she’d be channeling Sisko’s badass soldier. But she wasn’t consistent and a lot of her morals were…sketchy.

I’m fine with Starfleet being mostly humans, I always got the impression that humans were the go-getters of the Federation with everybody else there for the ride. Star Trek aliens are mostly allegories to explore certain themes like Cardassians with fascism or the Klingons when they want to have fun.

Except on Discovery where they’re Trumpies.

My issue with this show being mostly human-centric is, well, the past Star Trek shows have progressively added more and more characters from other races. But it seems like the recent shows have been taking steps backwards in diversity. By comparison, look at Voyager and Deep Space Nine.

-Star Trek: Voyager gave us a Vulcan, a half-Klingon-half-human hybrid, two new characters (Neelix and Kes) of previously unseen species, a former Borg drone woman, and a freaking hologram.

-Deep Space Nine gave us a Bajoran, a Changeling, three Ferengi, a Trill/Symbiont (technically two, long story), a genetically modified human (a la Khan), a Cardassian, and a Klingon… granted, a Klingon who was also one of the main characters on The Next Generation, but still, he counts. Hell, there are only three straightforward human main characters in Deep Space Nine.

When a live-action show, which has budgetary and practical constraints, has a more diverse cast than an animated show, where you can do anything you want and there are practically no boundaries, you are doing something wrong.

If I remember correctly DS9 took place on a space station partly because they wanted more non-human character perspectives and wouldn’t get so much on another ship because Roddenberry sort of implied that Starfleet was primarily human.

Yes DS9 had lots of aliens but it wasn’t just visual they did stuff with that unique perspective of not being part of the Federation. Voyager not so much.

First Seven was a human, in fact her entire arc is about learning that being human is so much more awesome than being a Borg. Torres is kinda cheating too cause the primary source of her “alieness” was her temper. Neelix was just a shithead (with no soul) and I liked Kes, but her species was retarded. The Doctor was great, but a lot of his arc is like Seven’s with wanting to be more human thing.

Yeah I definitely agree that animation is so much more unconstrained and this is partly why live action remakes are always inferior.

Netflix needs something since, other shows aren’t pulling people in. In fact, they’ve lost millions.

And if this show isn’t being made by Chad, it’s not gonna be good.
