Sometimes. But more to the point, the show doesn’t really have time for character stuff. Witness another commonly shat upon arc in RWBY, the “Cast sit around in a house and talk about their feelings”, which had some fine character moments but meshed horribly with the scenes of the villains out… actually doing stuff, while the main cast sat on their asses accomplishing nothing.

Realistically speaking, while the world is in danger and you’re on the frontlines, even people like Nora are understandably a bit more restrained and professional. They don’t have the luxury of being cute, funny kids.

Heh. You made a really good point here. As someone who mainly cares for characters over a story (I personally believe the characters are what make a good story) I’m not surprised I ended up liking the comedy spin-off series more than the main show….

I would hope it gets a couple of more seasons in future but there are not many chances. The show skipped 2019 and third season didn’t even end with Ruby saluting the crowd like she did in the first two seasons, and like if it wasn’t enough Rooster Teeth is facing several financial issues (their fault by the way) so while I can’t be sure, chances to see more seasons of the spin-off are rather low.

It’s more that I’m trying to find another series to turn to in case TDP gets cancelled (which is seeming like a more and more realistic possibility) but none of the other shows I’ve been watching have filled that same Avatar-shaped hole.

@Philweasel
I don’t even mind camp—I love the ‘60s Batman show, for example—but that show was pushing it a bit on the girly factor. (Is that sexist for me to say? I’m sorry.)

…That statement right there. That’s EXACTLY what I hate about modern animation discourse. Wanting everything to be “the next Avatar” or “the next Gravity Falls” and holding these shows as the standard for which all animation should be held against.

And if a show dares to not be like those, it gets slammed for supposedly “not trying”, with the inevitable “BEING A KID’S SHOW IS NO EXCUSE FOR POOR QUALITY!” refrain regardless of whether or not something is good on its own merits.

It’s less that I want it to be just like Avatar, and more that I’ve felt a bit of a hole in my heart ever since I finished watching that show, and have been looking for something else to get into.

Trust me, I have no strict genre preferences. I think I’m pretty varied in the types of shows I enjoy: I’m really into sci-fi like Firefly and Star Trek, fantasy shows like Avatar and Gargoyles, and supernatural mystery shows like Twin Peaks, but I’m also into comedies like That ‘70s Show and Freaks and Geeks.

So please don’t try to act like everything wrong with the world of media criticism, okay?

And also, just an addendum: I never once said the shows I mentioned were bad, just that for whatever reason I can’t get into them. You know me. If I thought they were bad, I would say so. The sheer fact that I’m asking if it’s wrong that I’m not into them should indicate that I don’t think they’re bad.

Yeah, no, I get it. It’s the whole idea of holding every show to such a high standard. Hell, I personally don’t like how people have tried to call certain shows “the Avatar of the 2010s,” since it’s too high a standard to live up to. I wouldn’t criticize any show because “0/10, it’s not Avatar,” I’d try to look at it based on its own merits. My whole point was about something a little different regarding my own personal interest more than anything objective.

I think before TDP, the one show that interested me as much as Avatar was Aggretsuko, which had a completely different tone and scenario.

Okay, Netflix confuses me. They’re releasing Book Three of The Dragon Prince at midnight PST, which is 3:00 AM EST.

My question is, why then? Why that time? It’s such a damn inconvenient time for binge-watching a season. And this is Netflix we’re talking about; they actively encourage binge-watching by releasing an entire season at once instead of spacing it out weekly like other platforms do.

I suppose.

Speaking of which, one episode in and Book Two of TDP has me hooked. Nowhere near as cliffhanger-y as last season’s first episode, thankfully, so I can sleep and watch more tomorrow without thoughts consuming my soul.

I swear, I will be so mad if She-Ra: Princesses of Power ends with Catra and Adora hooking up. Like fuck, these two are obviously toxic to one another. Give Catra to Scorpia or something, just not Adora.

Already from the few episodes I watched, I could tell those two wouldn’t work out, especially now that they’re full-blown enemies. Kinda startles me how people still want them to get together, TBH.
