That’s exactly what happened, yeah. Why didn’t they just leave him an adult?
Apparently, the reason was that due to the time difference between the two worlds, while ten years passed in the human world, only one year passed in Sonic’s world, which makes no sense in the long term, but I guess they really wanted him to stay a kid for some reason. My guess is that it’s because of the Ash Ketchum principle in anime, where every anime based on a video game that isn’t centered around human characters needs to have a human boy in the starring role.
