Hoshiai no Sora ep 1. Excellent start.
Absolutely brimming with charming, smartly observed, and expressive character acting. Character traits and drama are conveyed clearly just through the animation. Conversations between groups of characters are never still, creating a particularly convincing depiction of adolescent life. Great dramatic timing as well, it knows just when and for how long to hold a cut to let their emotional impact land. I don’t even mind the romantic coding, Maki and Kanako are cute together.
And contrasting the energetic animation and beautiful backgrounds are each protagonist’s unhappy life, and it conveys them with unflinching clarity. And through the full context of Touma and Maki’s lives, this show immediately shows what sports (and games in general) can bring to troubled childhoods.
Blade of the Immortal ep 2. Still not impressed with the choreography, but the atmosphere and drama are good. I like that this structure of fighting a long chain of monsters and murders actually plays into its theme that revenge is a unending chain. I like the show constantly challenging Rin’s resolve. I mean, she’s still a child and she’s devoted herself to this revenge mission, she really doesn’t know what she’s doing. (I do hope this leads to actual development, though.) I like the shows message that our past pain shouldn’t be completely forgotten but channeled into strength. I also wonder if Cannon Busters took inspiration from this, as it handles immortality in a similar way.
Still behind, but getting there. Looking forward to how horny MHA can make its recap ep.
