Yesterday was the five year anniversary of Zoe Quinn’s ex posting about their breakup, and allegations of her sleeping with a reviewer to get her game a good review.

Her stupid ass Depression Quest game that’s not even a game at all.
 
A game requires challenge and a win/lose condition. It’s literally part of the definition. What the hell does DQ have? You are forced to lose at every choice, and there isn’t even a challenge. It’s the same reason why no one calls a walking simulator a “game”.
 
In fact, Depression Quest is even less than a walking simulator. It doesn’t even fucking walk.

yeah, I didn’t see a lot of them demanding the firing of the Battlefield V staff when they did all that garbage. He “quit” after the game sold worse since Hardline. :3

Confining games to this stupid “you must win/lose” is detrimental to video games  
It stifles creativity and gives a pass to devs like David cage who would absolutely love to have his games treated not like games but as something else  
The binary between video games and interactive media is breaking down yes  
But I don’t see it as negative, but a good, a positive good

I’ve found that the vast majority of “gamers” that care about “gaming” give absolutely no shits about the people making games outside of a very small list of personalities that are treated like celebrities. The instant there’s any inconvenience or a game isn’t an 11/10, it’s straight to “I’ll just pirate it”, “the devs are hacks”, “I hope this studio closes down and everyone involved fucking dies”.
 
I guess this is what happens when people have so little going on in their lives outside of playing games.

These are all games. They aren’t video games but they are games nonetheless. All of them have clear win/lose conditions. You can’t just change definitions willy-nilly. That’s like calling a horse an automobile because you use it to go places.
 
Games are part of digital interactive media. BUT that doesn’t mean all interactive media are games. Correlation, causation, whatevs.
 
Also, David Cage “games” suck. Everyone agreed that DBH was a shit game with a shit story. We keep it around to as an example how not to do things.

Games have a clearly defined path. You either win or lose/succeed or fail. Walking simulators are not games and neither are these other shit games that have no defined win/lose condition.

You know what games are ? Social action  
There isn’t a physical law that says “games have to be X”  
According to your logic, the Stanley parable and the Beginner’s guide, two of the greatest games ever made, aren’t games because they don’t have win/lose conditions  
The sims ? There really isn’t a win/lose condition there
 
And even if they aren’t games
 
So fucking what ? They can be just as enjoyable, if not more than games  
If the beginner’s guide isn’t a game, then you aren’t helping video games as a whole, you are bringing it down

While I can’t speak for The Stanley Parable or The Beginner’s Guide, you can lose in The Sims. If your household falls to having no members, whether by accident or deliberately, the game ends.
