Ya’ll made me realize I never explained why I like my fave starters. Oh well, I’ll do that now.
Charmander was one of the first Pokemon I truly loved, along with Meowth. I loved seeing it in the anime (and wished it didn’t evolve so fast…) I carried a Charmander plush everywhere (still have it) always kept choosing it in every game I could because I loved it so much. Charmander evolving into a dragon looking Pokemon was just a bonus, with as much as I love Charizard too, Charmander is the reason why, nothing about popularity or some such bullshit.
I didn’t really know what starter to choose when I first got Pokemon Gold, I just kept restarting the game that day and picking each starter over and over, I don’t know who I settled on that first time, but I knew eventually that Totodile was my favorite. I remember getting a pack of Pokemon TCG cards from the Neo Genesis set and getting a Croconaw card, thinking it was the best thing ever, because I’m easily pleased, you see. By then I knew Totodile was my fave of the three.
I first saw Treecko in a magazine before it even had an english name, so I just knew it as it’s japanese name for a short while, Kimori. I saw Kimori’s artwork and was blown away by how much I liked it, and I instantly knew then it would be my starter before I even could play the game. I also remember seeing a screenshot with a Grovyle in it and I didn’t know Kimori evolved into that, I just saw a cool leaf dinosaur and thought it was a legendary, imagine how amazed I was when Treecko evolved into that. Plus, Treecko was the first Grass type I actually decided to give attention to and made me appreciate them. Forever my favorite starter.
Kinda like Treecko, I knew of Piplup at first by it’s Japanese name before the games were even released in Japan (Pochama, which I still prefer, along with it’s Japanese anime voice…) and I’d wanted a penguin Pokemon for years at that point, so I was so happy to see one as a starter! It helped that at around 2006 I had a mini penguin obsession so Pochama helped fuel that. The Sinnoh games aren’t even close to my faves, but I’ll still always pick Piplup (If I don’t pick Turtwig).
The story of the Unova starters early popularity is probably more well known, Smugleaf was my early favorite as it’s a grass snake and by then I knew I liked a lot of grass types. It helps that I think Serperior is gorgeous. Too bad it’s movepool is rather limited (Fuck you, Emboar in stealing all the good moves that gen) but I still manage to have fun with it, like the snake-pokemon exclusive moves Coil and Glare. I really want a life sized Snivy plush
As par for the course of most of these, Fennekin was an early favorite and I have little else to add. Adorable and awesome. I like mine to be male because I don’t really see anything explicitly female looking about it. I know witches and all but that doesn’t make it look any less gender neutral in my eyes. I held my Fennekin back from evolving for a few levels and then my Braixen as I just wanted to enjoy them for longer. Still love Delphox too.
Litten was the early favorite again. In the end, I don’t like it’s final form all too much, but if you compare it to all the other musclebound Pokemon, Incineroar is one of the least terrible in my opinion, and I can’t say no to Litten. Basically, I can tolerate Incineroar and I don’t dislike it, I’d prefer it didn’t look like it did and I’m a bit disappointed it’s not more pleasing to my eyes, but I’d take it over Emboar or Infernape any day. I like Decidueye more as a final starter form, but Rowlet is just average to me.
