Just read a fascinating paper about the growing body of evidence that we may be able “end aging” withing a decade.

Well, it’s more that we may be able to push our life-span up to 150, giving experts more time to do the research to keep pushing that number up and up.

I’ll bet you this. The moment that we create any technology that can push aging back considerably, a lot of rich folk are going to suddenly be really concerned about the environment.

Your perception of a disaster changes when you are suddenly faced with the prospect of living through it.

My nephew is working in some secret think tank in the EU printing human flesh on some synthetic matrix using 3d printers, to make hearts and shit like that. “Muscles are easy” he says, mourning how many blood vessels there are in something like a kidney. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if vanity replacement organs become a thing in the next twenty or forty years.

One of my friends who is in that field says the children of the people born this year may be the first humans to have to make a conscious choice whether to die of old age or not.

The recent advances go well beyond making the future generations long lived. If you’re 40 or under, you’ll likely see a significant increase in the human lifespan.

Gen Y and Z may be the starting point of a new epoch in human history.

I’m not looking to live forever, but if I can get like a few hundred years I’m good.

It is already unsustainable.

But, lets keep some things in mind. First, the technology will be pretty much exclusive to the first world for many years. While leading experts believe that the average Westerner will benefit (as it is predicted to be fairly cheap) places with a much more rapidly growing population (read, poorer) will likely not have access to it.

Secondly, if you can extend your lifespan by 50, 60+ years, and still be healthy and fit as a fiddle…then there is no impetus to breed early and often. You’d see the average child bearing age shoot up dramatically.

Thirdly, now that we would be living into the greater future…suddenly a lot more people are going to see sustainability and climate change as important. It will no longer be “our grandkids problem”.

And lastly, if our experts can live longer, and focus on their work more, space colonies may not be far off.

I’m well over that age now. When my grandparents were my age, most of them were bedridden or dead. When my father was my age he’d a full set of false teeth and my mother already had early onset of dementia.

It’s like cars. When I was child, cars lasted 3 or 5 years and when they hit fifty thousand miles they were junkers. If they still ran their floorboards were so rusted you could see through them to the road. Now a hundred thousand miles is just “nicely broken in”.

I like this future. It is a good one, in many ways.

When I was in grade school, 4 billion was the maximum population of the earth, at which point the human race would collapse and enter a period of endless war over exhausted resources.

We got the “endless war” part right, at least.

No one. Yesterday a jet flew over my house. Just one. First one this week.

Time to move - it’s getting too crowded around here.

I’ve lived and worked in Tokyo, and commuted through Harajuku and Shinjuku every freaking day. This planet has so much room for more people it’s ridiculous. American cities by comparison are freaking empty forests with just one person every now and then.

I used to commute through a single train station that all by itself - a single building - had almost as many people go through it every single week day as there are people living in LA.

Imagine almost 90% of the entire population of LA walking through and sharing a single train station every single day of the week.

That … that is crowded.

LA is like a desert by comparison to a big city.

Your city has so much spare room it sets aside entire buildings that are only used by cars.

Only unsustainable under the current system

We produce more food to feed 8 billion people
Just that most of it go to western countries, where most people there struggle to get it, and the top 0.0001% of the world are eating steaks laden in gold

After that, let’s find a way to reverse the effects of aging. I’ll be 33 in October and although I find aging slowdown to be a blessing, I’d hate to be in my 70s while still feeling like I’m in my 40s or 50s (both of my paternal grandparents died in their 70s.)
