The downfall of TGWTG or Channel Awesome

I can imagine they changed the YouTube thumbnail because it may not have been considered to be advertiser-friendly, since thumbnails can also contribute whether or not the video could be monetized.

Cinematic Venom made a new documentary detailing how Channel Awesome/That Guy with The Glasses came to be and how Doug, Rob and Michaud burned it down through treating everyone like shit.
That surprisingly remains up, despite a recent change of heart…

I still think his documentary is pretty good mind you, despite him being a bit exceptional on twitter about CTC. He is right about them however when talking about how they’re shitty in their own right.

After the CTC drama, Erod began to block people left and right over the drama since he wanted to be left out of it.

@Ebalosus

Ironic considering how obsessive he was with going all CTC like despite being exactly like the Walker’s content and of course, mocking people who support CA either way (putting those who do art vs the artist in the crowd of blind fans).

CV is a shit face too tbh:

Aside from just making CTC videos for clout, he responded to critics with a smug attitude, acted like a tool about it on social media, and sometimes came off as if he just wanted to get into Lupa’s pants than anything.

According to the Kiwifarms thread, it’s because Cinematic Venom a year before CTC was making videos making fun of and criticising E-Rod, and after E-Rod promoted CV’s documentary on Twitter, the aforementioned videos were brought to light. This led to a complete clusterfuck where all the CTC people sided with E-Rod and froze CV the fuck out, despite him being on their side. Yes CV is a dick, but the way CTC are acting is just hurting their position more than it’s helping.

Oh there are victims and there are perpetrators, but while the usual suspects are to blame for what happened, a lot of the CTC alumni had a hand in perpetuating what happened. The people still at CA (besides Larry) aren’t blameless, but a lot of the CTC people aren’t innocent either. You can look back on my posts in this thread on who I think were the most victimised by CA, but will add E-Rod to the list for much the same reason as Mike J: superfans of the site who wanted to be a part of it, who got in through making content and participating in the forums, only to be ignored by the Chicago crew. Whereas Mike J saw a major member shit on a fan behind said fan’s back, E-Rod was shat on both during his tenure and afterwards by Sadpanda due to the latter not thinking he had any talent. WTF!? Say what you will about the Blockbuster Buster, but at least he tried.

I especially like this quote by Mizafuginmike on Kiwifarms:
That “media empire” only toppled over after it was already a dried up carcass. None of those creators were willing to bite the hand that fed them until it stopped feeding them, ergo they all kicked and walked away from a website that was built around blip videos after the whole blip system had died. It would be like if, tomorrow, a whole bunch of us started posting about how unfairly Myspace used to treat us, started a #CancelMyspace tag and closed our old pages. ChannelAwesome was already long dead and Doug’s YT channel was its own, distinct thing. SomeJerkWithACamera rage quitting the old website was never going to affect The NC’s YT #s one bit.
If things were as bad as they said they were in 2011 and 2012 (when most of the bad stuff is alleged to have happened), if they had released the Google Doc after To Boldy Flee, or even any time during 2012, they would completely brought down the house of Michaud; and while I can understand why they waited, it’s too little too late to get any semblance of justice from the likes of Michaud or the Walker brothers.

Anyway, after catching up on the TGWTG thread proper on Kiwifarms, I found some more interesting tidbits about what Doug is really like: He was a total prick to ConBravo because the con wouldn’t assuage him despite only being a little con. Linkara corroborated this and added that they all (sans the Walkers) went to MAGFest at their own expense to meet up and hang out with each other, as well as occasionally host panels, because of how much they enjoyed it. Doug, despite being a prima donna to a smaller con, wasn’t willing to go to a bigger con and do panels with them because MAGFest wouldn’t pay for it, despite him definitely having the means to do so himself.

So basically, this whole situation happened the way it did due to poor timing?

Also, had this Google Doc been released in 2012, would people, especially the fans of the Walkers, have even cared? I mean, in 2012, that was the height, or at least, near the height, of the Nostalgia Critic’s popularity.

I’m biased because that’s when I started watching, but I thought Walker hit his peak somewhere between 2009-2011; He had the Anniversary Brawl and his Coming Out of Their Shells review with AVGN in ‘09, which culminated their feud. 2010 had Kickassia. 2011 had Suburban Knights and the return of That Dude in the Suede, but it also had the Let’s Play of Bart’s Nightmare. 2012 was when things with Spoony blew up, and while To Boldly Flee was a hit, it was immediately followed by the announcement that the NC was gone. So yeah, I think 2012-early 2013, right when Demo Reel was bombing and Walker no longer had the Critic persona to bring in new fans, could’ve been the best time.

Maybe the appetite for focusing on the scandals behind content creators rather than awkward lolcows wasn’t as strong back then and SOPA had a rallying effect. People mock Walker for To Boldly Flee’s hamfisted commentary now, but they forget that SOPA set the entire Internet on fire at the time; he was just one of those who would have lost the most from it.

Still, though, I think ChangeTheChannel in 2012 could’ve been very plausible. Walker’s never been free from criticism.
