Indeed. It becomes like carrying a lot of oiled oranges without a basket. (why you would oil an orange I do not know) The more you have to carry the harder it becomes to hold onto them all.
Except in this case the oranges also happen to be sentient and actively trying to get free.
Twilight’s lifted heavy objects, but has she ever showed this much power holding down ponies? It’s common in fantasy settings for spells to be more difficult to use against unwilling targets, and ponies are stronger than they look, especially earth ponies; it’s not hard to believe that this particular spell is more difficult than what she’s done before.
Think about it, there’s probably a lot of focus, high accuracy and precision involved with this spell. After all, she stopped the fighting parties and their ammunition, but not Fluttershy and the animals. If I would translate this how my own mind could pull off something like this (if I were able to do magic I suppose), that’s one heck of a complicated procedure.
That’s the benefit of having unexplained magic systems; we have no idea how diffult spells of different types are.
There’s nothing in the show that says holding 20 or so ponies in a stasis field isn’t as difficult as shown.
She’s been shown so many times to be far more powerful, and then out of the blue she takes a nerf for the plot. And it wasn’t even a necessary nerf like other times, she could have done it without struggling and the plot would have been the same, Fluttershy speaks while she holds them.
