yes, that’s also possible. At least the whole “Nightmare Moon kills everyone with her eternal night” comments are now invalid. Nightmare isn’t stupid and I’m sure she had some plan to create an endless night without hurting her subjects

Also we see in s04e01 that the day and night are not the same concept as we know it.  
It seems that we have to forget the whole moonlight comes from the sun. Night time and day day look to be completely magical concepts, who knows how the sun and moon work in their world. So maybe the moon is perfectly capable of sustaining life.

Well, technically we only need the sunlight but we don’t need it directly from the sun. “Moonlight” is nothing more than sunlight reflected by the moon. Since nightmare moon can control the moon she most likely can find a way to increase the light reflected by it. Her main goal is that ponies (and everyone else) love the night as much as she is.  
By moving the moon the right way, she can create a new night and day cycle but without creating too much light, so that the stars are disappearing. That way everyone still has enough sunlight to be happy and to survive without actually ending the night.
 
I know, in the episode it was “night night” and not a “day night” but like I said, Nightmare Moon might have created a new night and day cycle. Maybe in that timeline 12AM is now midnight while 12PM is midday.

That’s a nice idea actually, I like it. Fits well with what we know about Equestria weather system, but how do they deal with the lack of sunlight?
 
Still, I prefer to think that NMM is more than a stupid villain that would have destroyed the world by sheer incompetence. Who knows what kind of light and heat their moon is capable of producing.

I’ve read one fic that explains that under NMMs rule, pegasi use their weather manipulation powers en mass to circulate air from the hot constant day side of the planet to the cold constant night side of the planet, thus keeping both halves in habitable condition

I’d say that yes, they could survive; Ponies are larger than the maximum size needed to survive situation like that and being herbivores would feel the impact of it fairly quickly, Nightmare Moon also mentions that multiple years have gone by (don’t forget, it’s the same time that season 5 takes place, just in another universe). Simply put, if all of Equinity were going going to die as a result of eternal night, it would have happened already.
 
 
However, Nightmare Moon could be a dictator, which would cause problems and there are other purposes sunlight fulfills that were likely considered secondary to survival, including the regulation of certain chemicals and providing vitamin D. In other words, they can survive, but a lot of Ponies likely have seratonin imbalances

I didn’t have time to see the episode yet. Tell me - does this mean that plants, ponies and stuff CAN live without the sun in canon Equestria and all the bronies were wrong? Or can’t they?

In the fic plants start dying and ponies are suffering from the lack of sunlight. Nyx decides to go against NMM original plans because she is literally killing everyone. But Nyx wouldn’t exist in this timeline anyway, since NMM never lost. Still, cute idea.

In the fic she decided herself that it was killing or something from what I’ve heard. Maybe NMM raises the moon every once in a while too. I mean Celestia doesn’t have eternal day.

If that NMM met Nyx she would probably try to adopt her or at least take her as a student. Since the whole “Equestria will die without the sun” didn’t happen, Nyx has no reason to not follow NMM’s steps.
