To actually explore the issue I dove into the world of font legality.
 
Technically, a type-face like what you see on the screen isn’t protected by copy-right. I could open up Photoshop and redraw this type-face with the pen tool and no one could do anything. But what is protected in the software behind that type-style which is the font itself. People who draw the type-style and write the font program that tells the computer to display X and the printer to print X is protected by copyright. So there is a technical distinction that just so happens to now in the modern world cover all manners of modern type, defacto translating into all type-faces being copyrighted.
 
Otherwise the only other thind legally protected is the name of the type-style through Trademark.

That’s just plain stupid. You could copyright and patent every shit i suppose. One side it’s somewhat nice that creators of something are protected, but the most time this shit gets out of control.

I didn’t even know you could trademark fonts.
 
You can and when I go shopping for free fronts I try to keep an eye on the terms of use. I only really target fonts that say I’m allowed to use commercially because otherwise I’ll have to be alert on what I use or even pay a licensing fee when I get them.
