Description

Ember stared at the teen Dragon before her, a far cry from the runt she had befriended.
“S-Spike, it’s so good to see you. It’s been a while… you’ve grown.”
Spike chuckled. “ Yeah, I hit a major growth spurt, was a pain in the scales for a while.”
Ember laughed with him, but a slightly nervous laugh.
“ So what brings you here?” She asked.
Spike stretched his new wings and smiled.
“ I thought we could hang out, go flying. I’m still getting use to the wings.”
He outstretched his right claw.
“ Come on, we can have a race.”
Ember’s face started to heat up, she looked at his hand and back up to his eyes. The same soft eyes she knew, but more mature. She nervously reached out and grasped his claw.
“ O-Okay… let’s go.”

I loved this episode and I really hope Princess Ember returns. Let me know what you think.:)

Additionally, both iterations of adult Spike bear no wings. I mean, that could change, it’s not the first left field retcon this show has made. XD
What’s interesting here is that it wouldn’t even need to be a retcon. They could simply have Twilight say that she once asked Ember about this in a letter (they’re apparently pen pals now) and it turns out that only by aging normally do dragons get their wings. Shortcuts like greed or magic don’t work. Or that they somehow “earn” their wings as some sort of cutiemark by doing something that its pretty normal and casual for young dragons, but Spike’s never had the chance to do due to living with ponies all his life.

Point is, since they’ve never addressed the issue on any detail, any explanation they come up with would avoid making it a retcon.

Even though Spike’s still a dragon, I feel like I’m looking at a race swap. Like, he’s become whatever type of dragon Ember is, down to growing wings, horns, and his tail tip changing. Not to mention the diamond patterning, which isn’t even a thing with other dragons. His feet haven’t gone totally digitigrade, though.

Well, maybe not a gag per-say and more what he thinks he wants, but is overcompensating for his character flaws.
So yeah, something much more balanced and fitting to his character would be nice.
Though on that note just getting on with it and increasing his age somehow would also be nice.

Yeah, and personally I’m actually more in favor of him never having wings …aaaat least as long as they give us an interesting explanation why that is, like he is part [whatever]-dragon that normally don’t have wings, but excel in some other medium. If they did retcon those aged-up variants of him and give him wings, I wouldn’t complain, but I think I’d personally prefer worldbuilding and storytelling over one little design feature.

Especially since what I’m not a fan of is his older self’s design - the drawings the fandom makes for his older self are usually pretty sweet looking (with or without wings), and would fit perfectly for how Spike sees himself/wants to be when he does grow up. But the way aged-up Spike looked in the show doesn’t fit with any of his characterizations (which I guess worked out since he wasn’t really his kinder self at the time, but his dream-self is also kind of bleh and doesn’t really fit his character)
