Oh, btw - the Statue of Liberty is just a little taller than the Space Shuttle, and the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building and other “big” monuments just dwarf everything.
@Background Pony #CA55
I’ll definitely do some comparison with real horses and stuff in a bit, but I’m terribly burned out at the moment - 5 hours of GIMP taking 5 seconds to complete any action (including just moving the camera), and NO result from it. That was frustrating.
This chart is good for large-scale things - it’d make more sense to make a whole new one for smaller-scale things so that they can have a decent resolution. Here they’d all be blurry and tiny and wouldn’t really change much on how you see the large-scale stuff, anyways.
Also, fun fact: that destroyer is only about half as long as a WWII-era battleship.
@angrybrony
I used a very thorough method outlined here to make the sizes of everything perfect.
@DragonWraith
There’s that shot of Sunset Shimmer riding a horse in that Friendship Through The Ages video, I thought that would have given an idea on their height.
@Cirrus Light
Aw, forget it! I’ve been at this for hours and it’s gotten to the point where GIMP can’t even save the darn thing without it crashing. It’s way too big. I’ll have to come back to this later when it hasn’t stressed me out so badly >.<
I’d kinda like to make one from scratch, though, for comparing ponies to real horses.
Also, I’m not too happy about how the EQG things came out. Average human height is 5’6”. EQG height of the mane six is 5’6”. But it looks really odd to compare a vitruvian man to one of them, both with the same height. And Principal Celestia’s like a seven foot giant O.o
@DragonWraith
Oooh, great ideas, actually. I’d like to compare Celestia to a real horse while at it.
One thing I’ve always thought since I first saw the show, is that it’s “My Little Pony.” That, in my mind, is why Celestia, their leader, was taller than all of them. They’re all ponies, while she’s a full horse :p
Later episodes and fandom did away with that idea (plus we’d even seen plenty of adult “ponies” up to that point, too :p ), but in terms of size, it’s still interesting. I’m gonna bet Celestia and Luna are very close to a real horse’s size, while the ponies are smaller than a Shetland pony.
There’s another one - Shetland pony…
And a few cars. I don’t know cars, though. F-150 pickup is the only name I know, and maybe a hummer, sequia, humvee. Some small car, too, for comparison?
Ooh, and other space program crafts!
And as for the F-18 again, here’s some pics to get a better sense of size. I just love pics of the F-18 :p
@DragonWraith
Okay, yeah, there was a scaling error. I think I did set her height to 40 pixels, despite the bowed head making it so it should’ve been shorter.
Here’s a comparison. Rarity on left is old, Rarity on right is the newer re-scaled:
The methodology I’ve used for everything on here, is to start with 40 pixels = 1 meter (roughly Twilight’s height, here). Then I take the length of the object, and measure how many pixels it is in its own image (L px ). Get it’s real-life length (L m ), and use the 40 pixels/m to re-scale it. Re-scaling the image doesn’t change the real-life length, obviously, so I just scale the image so that L px / L m = 40.
If L px / L m = 88, for example, then 88k = 40, k = 40/88 = ~0.454545, so I need to re-scale the image to 0.454545 times its original size to make it in-scale with everything else.
The problem with ponies is getting a reference point. The destroyer image had a measuring bar which made it easy. I looked up the length of everything else to get their sizes (thank you, wikipedia!).
Pilot Rainbow was easy since the image is almost exactly as tall as she is and she’s standing upright. But Rarity’s hard because her head is lowered, making a height measurement a lot harder. Ponies, organic beings are fluid, stretchy, bendy, etc. So to get a solid, unchanging reference point, I measured from the back of the jaw to the tip of the scalp, and used that length re-scaling process above. This yielded the “corrected” Rarity you see to Twilight’s right the right of Twilight [actually Twilight’s left, since she’s looking out of the screen, lol, derp].
Also, I just realized I’m off. The 98cm figure is for hooftip to scalp. I’ve been using hooftip to tip of horn, so the ponies are a bit too small - the difference is 1m = 40 pixels vs. 1m = 37 pixels, so it’s less than a 10% error, well within the margins of pony sizes, anyways, based on the data figures used in the table, but, for good practice I want to correct it so the chart is on that middle value.
While I’m at it, I think I’ll also double the resolution? 37 pixel ponies are just a bit too blurry :q I still have the pony sources, so re-scaling them shouldn’t be too hard. I’ll also have to re-grab the tactical nuclear missile, but everything else has already been scaled up, so no real loss, there.
If I get some comments in the next 5 minutes I might could throw some more stuff in for size comparison :q
