LyraBon, FlutterCord and probably also StarBurst and MarbleMac will always get to be teased whenever theres an opportunity. But for them to become canon, some major story development would have to happen, like Hasbro demanding offspring from these characters.

I doubt it will ever become canon either, there probably still gonna be hints but nothing beyond usual friendshipping. The ship should stay in fanon as it supposed to. And yeah comic covers mean absolutely nothing, they could place almost anything there, comics are just glorified fan fiction, many people like myself don’t even consider them canon.

There probably wasn’t, but as you said ‘shippers felt vindicated by that “jam session” scene. TVTropes even called it “G-rated sex.” (Bits like Octavia’s bowtie coming off didn’t help either.)
I think they were trying to tease fans.
Honestly, I prefer them being platonic, (same for LyraBon) and it annoys me when the shippers insist said shippings are now canon, (thanks to “Slice of Life” & such, said episode I actually enjoyed) and also insist we can’t portray the characters any other way, but in a romantic relationship. I’ve seen fans get called “homophobic,” or something just ‘cause they don’t care for a popular ‘ship, and such. Doesn’t help that 90% of fans wildly support these popular ships, so many others jump on the bandwagon too that they’re an OTP.
I also kinda wish fans would try shipping Lyra, BonBon, Vinyl, and Octavia with other characters too sometimes, giving them more variety, at least. Said characters feel almost completely taken over by their ships. (And it just feels like it’s bleeding into the show a bit)
They can ‘ship all they want, I’m just saying I feel fans should be allowed to portray them other ways too, or can ship them with other characters if they wish. Never really liked how fans insist there can only be one OTP for certain characters.

The question would have been about Marble and Big Mac or about Starlight and Sunburst and the answer would have been the same. It doesn’t change the status of the ship or its possibility, it mean that specific character does not become a girlfriend of another specific character up until the last episode of S6.
“This season” doesn’t mean anything as it was obvious. I doubt they will drop fluttercord shipping in the future, they recently done another one in the comics covers.

There was absolutely nothing “shippy” about Vinyl and Octavia’s interactions in the show, to be honest. Granted, just them sharing a house is more canon “evidence” than most fandom ships get, so it’s little wonder Vinyltavia (is that right?) shippers feel like they’re being vindicated…
@Background Human
I’m afraid to check Miller’s twitter for fear that’s the subject of a follow-up question…
Gods these fucking people no one cares about your damn ships, and I’m a shipper myself and even I know this! Jesus just leave the show staff alone and stop asking them stupid questions they can’t even answer because of NDA. Most shippers don’t give a shit about their ships being canon the ones who ask these types of questions are attention whores.

1 or 2 background characters having a relationship is fine but the mane cast or a lot of the background characters getting canon fanon ships is a terrible idea.

They’re kinda bringing it on themselves too, sense they have been kinda teasing LyraBon & Vinyl X Octavia in the show feeding the shippers. Those are two of the most popular ‘ships in the fandom. Though, while they leave whether they’re platonic, or romantic kinda ambiguous, some things like Vinyl & Octavia’s “jam session” and Lyra & BonBon practically being all over each other despite being “best friends” (which got a li’l annoying to me honestly) are a bit blatant as far as the shippers are concerned.
Nothing against shipping, but I’d kinda prefer that no fanon ships become canon. Plus if they canonize said shippings, then that’s kinda unfair to the fans who prefer said characters in a platonic “just friends” relationship.
