Guesses aren’t facts. If the comics fails to even show Spike even touched the water, then saying he did in the next issue is retcons INSIDE A SINGLE ARC.
 
If you have to resort to that, your writing is bupkis. Either that or its more proof that communication just doesnt exist in IDW.

I can definitely see them using Spike for the “star trek cop out”. Just look how many times the day is saved because Spock/Data/Odo/Seven of Nine is immune to the disease of the week.

Likely because there are more mares than stallions and mares are more popular. If only females could be corrupted that would have some strange implications.
