Of the new design? Not really. To me, it looks like a failed (and unnecessary) attempt to make something prettier that was just right as it was. Changeling were interesting because they were different, now they just line in with the colorful rest.
Since Thorax is male and he has crystals on his necks, and we see that not all changelings have crystals on their necks, yet those who do couldn’t possibly all be royal, we can assume that only males have crystals on their necks.

A lot of insects have very complicated life-stages. Presumably the “black changelings” we knew were only an interim stage leading to this form. But… what if they still aren’t done?
Although this was very sudden, I’m actually very interested in the implications of this new ‘change’. It seems to me that the Changelings were once a very benign race and naturally appeared like this, especially when considering how well Thorax’s physiology responded to Friendship, and now this. So what I’m wondering is, what happened to the Changeling race that left them to take on their previous deprived and incomplete appearances and to their God-knows-how-long amount of time of nonstop starvation if they were originally inclined to kindness and such?
