Ah. Well I suppose the name he chose should have been the first red flag but I made the mistake of taking him seriously regardless. If this is his nature, then yeah there is no point in continuing discussion.

His responses are shitpost/trolling; don’t take anything he says at face value, he’ll just say whatever he thinks is most likely to get people riled up one way or another; don’t bother arguing with someone that doesn’t want to argue, just amuse himself.

Yeah, I think the responses have proven your opinion to be rather shallow in the grand scheme. Telling an artist “you could be so much better” or “you haven’t really improved much lately” is a pretty backhanded way of saying “I wish you drew better cause then I’d like it more.”

I’m not even an art critic and I can tell how much people improve, or find solidarity in their skill. You can’t force improvement. Whether its art, writing, music, anything. Just because YOU don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

I disagree, I’ve looked back at his older stuff and the shading, texturing and general expressiveness and vividness of colors etc. has gotten a lot better over time, I love how he’s evolved his line work too with a touch more thickness and visibility, looks a lot smoother now, there’s a lot of subtle changes in play in addition to this.

He has his own style that he has been improving on gradually over the years, and at this point, in my opinion, he’s just about perfected cute pone art in his style and the consistent high scores he gets from the community are further indication of how far he’s come, even on SFW pictures, there’s not many people around that consistently knock it out of the park in this way.

Art is all subjective of course and all artists have their own styles, he’ll continue to improve on the style he works in currently in subtle ways (if he even wants to, I’m pretty content with the level he’s reached) but I wouldn’t want to see him change completely or drastically due to a few displeased folks.

@A Racist Zebra
You assume I want to improve in a way YOU consider improving. I don’t aim for a more anatomically correct style, far from it, I like the more cartoony or exaggerated works.

I wouldn’t expect you to understand this, but most of the time, artists develop a style after working in a medium or theme for awhile. For Ponies, I’ve locked down a style that I’m known for. It’s taken years to do it and it’s been difficult to keep it consistent, which was one of my goals. I HAVE gotten considerably faster at drawing and these samey faces and poses you’re pointing out, including the one we’re currently on, are usually quick stupid posts made in an hour or two used as a reaction pic on tumblr. Not some magnum opus I spent months on.

My improvements are on a more subtle level. Not something I’d expect a non artist to see. Experiments with different shading techniques and colors resulting in deeper more vibrant shadows. I’ve been focusing on trying to improve my work with hair while also spending less time on it. Highlight and dynamic shading work to reinforce a more 3D feel. I’ve also focused less on ponies this year and more on human anatomy. That Dash you pointed out took me weeks when I drew it. Now it takes me a few hours. That Luna pic that you complained about my anatomy work on? That was a thirty minute challenge.

You and your bud Coinpo assume much about me and they way I work. You use general sweeping statements like “imagine where you could be” as if you yourself have any idea of what that means.

I have improved in the last year. I just haven’t done it in the way you’d understand or prefer. But at the end of all this. Why the fuck would I care what you want? This a silly hobby centered around cartoon horses I enjoy. I’m not going to change that because some randos on the internet get existential about horse porn.

Perhaps you should concern yourselves less with me and focus on improving your own work.

EDIT: Also, “same faces and poses” lol. Have you actually gone through my work and looked? Apart from occasional pieces like this one, they’re all over the place.

@CleverTwist
I never said he’s not a good artist as is. But art is not something that can possibly be perfected, but constantly improved upon. That’s why it saddens me to see Pudge’s quality stagnate. That’s not to say he’s bad on a technical level. Just that he hasn’t improved that level in years.
CleverTwist

@A Racist Zebra

Leaving out the issue of poor grammar, you imply that Pudge hasn’t or isn’t a good artist now. What’s to say he isn’t happy about where he is right now? For all you know, he doesn’t want to mess with what he has now. You are making a lot of assumptions based on your perception alone, a perception I think you’ll find to be yours and yours alone, friend.

@Cpt Pudge Muffin
The human pirate Dash from 2 years ago is the most radically different pic I can find. Please do tell me if I missed something interesting.
Everything else is same faces, poses, situations, emotions, cat’ness, angles, ponies etc.
Also I don’t see any notable improvement in drawing skill from Pudge 2 years ago and Pudge today, unless you draw like the Flash or something.
Alas I am just sorta bummed. You could have been a much better after all this time, and indeed should. Because you still have plenty room to grow. From shading, to line consistency, to anatomy, to coloring to proportions. Just imagine your current skill level, now imagine having perfected your art style. Pretty neat huh?
