They didn’t go as in-depth in Dragon society as we would’ve liked, and didn’t give a direct reason as for why adults didn’t compete in the challenge sure, but that’s not a plothole. We don’t know every detail of how it works, so assuming that if what we assumed would happen, doesn’t happen, then its a plothole doesn’t make sense. Torch made a call, the younger dragons arrive, not a single adult one did, and Torch considered this normal. The show not taking us by the hand and explained in detail why this point in partcular is normal for them isn’t a plothole. Call it bad writing if you want, I honestly don’t care, but lack of exposition for something that was never set in stone, doesn’t seem like a plothole.

To clarify, you assumed they should be there, and since they weren’t, its a plothole. Even though the show itself never stated or hinted that they (adults) would have to be there. Which is what would have actually made it a plothole.

Also, I never said the reasons I mentioned were my headcanon, so way in the world as you calling them such and saying they’re poor excuses and inconsequential? Geez. All I did was state how its not hard to imagine many reasons why the big dragons don’t compete. Whether you wanted an actual explanation for something the writers found unnecesary or took it personally because you wanted to see them there makes no difference. They don’t usually need to explain stuff that doesn’t concern the point of the episode. Why is it such a big deal now?

Whatever the reason is, the dragons themselves know it, Spike apparently didn’t care or thought about it, and whether Twilight thought about it or not, she didn’t/couldn’t ask so we didn’t get an answer. Nothing has been contradicted (yet) and they could still eventually fill that gap in information easily with a small comment in any possible future appearances.

well, torch forced the dragons to come to him. it makes sense he’d avoid doing it to the dragons capable of kicking his ass.
they never said he was the only dragon lord, or that he was the lord of all dragons.
maybe he was just some weird, eccentric who liked kidnapping little kids and forcing them to grab his–oh. oh no.

A plot hole is an element with the plot that is inconsistent with a previous element, and which cannot be plausibly reconciled. A “missing element” is not part of the definition of plot hole.

Missing elements can sometimes be bad writing, if the plot depends on said element, but that’s completely separate from them being plot holes.

I actually am in agreement and was not pleased with the gushing over Ember who had no depth.

Yes, Spike was too perfect and, as you said, many times when spike is the “hero”, they make the rest of the cast utter morons coughequestriagamescough

I felt good establishing moments for Spike were in, of all things, Secret of my Excess in giving a glimpse into his flaws but also his priorities, but also inspiration Manifestation where he did everything to please rarity, but knew when he had to make it right.

I also would lift up “the times are a changeling”, which had deeper potential writing barred by a 20 minute time limit with Spike putting his crystal empire fame on the line for the only denizen of the crystal empire who knows him for who he is, risking being judged not only by the rather stupid populace, but by his prior friends as being a traitor to the empire. Kinda really should have been a two parter with Spike facing that rejection in full from Shining until Twilight turns the judgement around, but if mabyes were daisies, we’d have a garden.

@Fwelin
I’m not gonna defend the writing, but what I gathered was; Spike abused the power for a while, but after Cadance told him “not to veer off of his instructions”, he followed them TOO closely and then a bunch of things that only a 4th wall observer would notice could go wrong did go wrong to make it look like Spike was a tool once again.

I long for a Spike episode where it properly plays to his strengths and flaws and doesn’t treat him like a pratfalling prop. We get glimpses of it here and there; such as when he’s assisting Starlight, which is what Celestia groomed him to do for Twilight, and he did very well; keeping her on track and stopping her from overthinking situations.

Spike coming off as a sarcastic and somewhat rude character at times seems to better fit what that personality would fall into should all of the advice go unheeded.

Yet at the same time, it also shows that Spike shouldn’t be such a dunce in most of these situations.

…not like its something extremely hard to imagine or requiring some roundabout explanation either.

The presence of the adults would have changed everything - which makes this a very important issue to address - and their absence is simply not explained at all. That is bad writing and you are making poor excuses for it.

Everything you said after that was strictly your personal headcanon and as such it is inconsequential.

Let me reiterate: you create a plothole when you, in a setting where their presence makes sense (deliberately) fail to address the characters that we all know are out there and could change the entire outcome of the episode by merely being present.

Again, a plothole is an obvious mistake or missing element in the plot of a film, book, TV show or play.
It doesn’t get more obvious than a group of mansion sized dragons, especially dragons that we have seen in the past, of which we know that at least one of them lives in the Everfree Forest, which is in Equestria.
So when multiple characters make the undisputed claim that dragons answer to the dragon lord, aka lord of the dragons (in Torch’s own words) it seems obvious that they should be there. If not, there needs to be a good explanation from the show itself as to why they are missing.

Writing 101.

Well, like QC said we can only speculate about that. However, imo its not like its something extremely hard to imagine or requiring some roundabout explanation either. It was probably just their custom that when a Dragon Lord has to step down, his/her successor must be selected among the kids. Sounds a bit weird and ineficient? Well, its not like their society has been portrayed that “advanced” in comparition.

Its a sapient race made up entirely of giant killing machines with little to no opposition, who apparently spend most of their time isolated from the rest of their kind once they become adults. I’d even argue its possible the title of Dragon Lord probabaly doesn’t mean much (if anything) for the other adult dragons, and only comes into play on the rare ocassions they have to meet for big decissions…if they do that at all.

That’s actually an interesting way to take the episode. I’ve had issues with it (and Ember) myself and never really knew how to express them in words, but you did that quite well.
