This isn’t a new thing sadly, see the derps who bought a PS4 for Bloodbourne.  
It’s probably mostly just kids who want one because it’s new.
 
Like I said before I don’t really keep up with Nintendo, I figured if they ever did something interesting I would hear of it without having to actively seek the information out. So far this is the first I’ve heard of anything since Splatoon tried to do a thing.

I’ve enjoyed both of those games, don’t get why people would fight over them, they’re not even that similar really.
 
Most of the reviews say the switch is a bit on cheap side in terms of quality and you’d be better off waiting for another version to release before getting one, so I am surprised so many people are rushing to get one.

I actually agree with you. Breath has been one of the biggest system sellers in history, almost singlehandedly (though with the help of a surprisingly healthy collection of Indy titles, which Nintendo seems to be using as a substitute for actual third-party support) pushing the Switch past the Wii in first week/month sales. And that is dumb, considering a perfectly functional Wii U version of the game exists. The Hell is everyone doing buying a Switch for one game for?
 
Though I’m a little surprise you haven’t heard much about Breath, considering how it’s rivalry with Horizon Zero Dawn has quite stupidly become the new front in both the Console Wars AND the Culture Wars.

That’s only half-true. Look at all the Titanfall Clones when compared to Titanfall’s shitty sales. People want innovation, but they want the innovation to be made familiar first.

The only problem I have with Nintendo is the Japan divisions aggressiveness to copyright everything and won’t let people give honest reviews of their titles. Other than that though their games have been pretty good.

It’s probably got a lot to do with the economy, maybe eventually we will see some innovation again.  
I just doubt it will be from Nintendo, or Sony or Microsoft.

Also, look at what sells. Gamers want games they’re familiar with, and that’s why innervated games don’t sell too well. Love yes, but not enough to encourage that trend.

While I have some hopes for the next Mario, I am prepared for another soulless if fun platformer because Shiggy can’t seem to grow up and let Mario be anything more than a toy.
 
Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, has been breaking sales records and may well come to be the most beloved Zelda since Orcarina.
 
Also, get over yourself. Having differing tastes does not imply mental health issues.

Don’t even get me started on that franchise, the hilarity that Infinite Warfare was is just too much.  
Halo is now COD and COD is now halo, it keeps happening.  
First Lost Planet and Dead Space and now this, it kills me.

I haven’t been concerned with Nintendo in 20 years, there’s been a lot of better stuff come out in the 20 years since the “old days”. Truth be told I don’t really think about Nintendo at all, same with most other people.  
Still, I can probably guess this years big title, another Mario right?

As an owner of the Wii, I never watched Netflix on it. Youtube, sure, but not Netflix. In fact, I usually play Brawl or Super Mario Strikers/Sluggers on it.
