Some don’t actually, and only like the fanart/fanfics apparently. Alot of people here have told me they haven’t watched the show in years, in fact. A friend of mine refuses to watch any episode prominently featuring Starlight, in fact, he dislikes her so much.
And yeah, I don’t get those guys either… I loved Season 1, but it’s honestly not perfect, nor the best Season IMO.

Some do hate them actually, and other characters.
beats me. one might as well hate Princess Twilight Sparkle and the Great and Powerful Trixie too by that same line of thinking. :/

also, some fans make a big stink when Glimmer supposedly “steals the spotlight,” but are totally okay when Shimmer is shoved right in their faces.

Yeah, but as a result, fans feel Starlight never got “what she deserved,” or developed her reformation enough, (or at least until later) like Sunset did. Sunset’s treatment made everyone feel sorry for her, and forgive her. That’s why fans easily forgave Sunset, but not Starlight.
Though, regardless it still feels like a bit of double standards to me, as I feel Sunset was just as easily reformed with rainbow beams, (and aside from rarely showing a temper problem, her personality is the complete opposite of what it used to be) and I felt she was a li’l too woobie-fied in Rainbow Rocks to the point she kinda stole all the spotlight. (Ironically, something some hate other characters for.)
Granted, Spike, Trixie, and others kinda rub Starlight’s nose in it at times, and she does still foul up. So Starlight still gets some of it back.
Still, I feel both characters have some flaws with their reformations. (So I tire of the “Sunset VS Starlight” fueds.)

Here’s my take on that: Starlight founded a quiet little village in the middle of nowhere, where apparently nopony else knew what she was up to aside from her villagers and the tree of harmony. And really, the only ones who knew about Starlight’s changes to the present were Twilight and Spike. It’s not like all of Equestria knew what she was up to.
By all accounts, Sunset was downright nasty to everyone in the school. Everyone knew who she was and everyone was afraid of her. Starlight never had that sort of infamy.

I agree this.
A) Some people are pissed off that Starlight seems to be more talented at magic than Twilight. Nopony is allowed to be better than Twilight! /s
B) Some people have too-high expectations for the writing of a kid’s show and cannot just shrug and accept some exposition when time is running short.
C) Some people are unable to infer untold parts of a story by piecing together clues.
D) Some people are just flat-out closed-minded.
E) Some people are all of the above.

Don’t forget the main character suddenly NEEDING her (because for some reason the deus ex machina didn’t work this time without any good enough explanation to me) even though she was mostly ignored the whole movie. Except to be reminded of how evvvvil she was. No offense taken by her of course!
Looks like if the character mentions it instead it’s bad. Which might be true, depends.
Apparently, get shot by a magic rainbow, become instantly nice, and have every unimportant character treat them like crap, so they can look cute & sad for a whole movie.
Granted, a few like Mrs. Cake kinda treated Glimmer like crap, but that wasn’t enough for nearly unintentionally destroying the world, I guess.
