They made me laugh and smile often and I thought that it would be good idea to create a little tribute to him as a little thank you for all those laughs and smiles. I imagine a pony like Lyra would be the type to laugh or wink herself about being taken for a ride in such a manner. So I made an origama Lyra reading a Silly Lyra comic. The original idea was to fold a Lyra sitting on a bench, but since I have done that already I let her lay on a paper blanket instead and dangle one of her legs in a rather human way (that can be seen better in this view of the scene from the other side).
Thank you very much, Wilson8787 :)
Your profile pic though…
Thank you very much, Phoenixflambe :)
Same here.
I just remembered that some other MLP origami artists have posted folding instructions for Ponies online. Their work is a lot more sophisticated (and therefore a lot more complex to fold) than my own however.
Cahoonas and Cyberglass are two origami artists whose work I really adore and who folded (among other) MLP ponies. Here is a step by step folding instruction for an origami pony as done by Cyberglass (like I said, it is more complex than the figures I have been folding).
Up to the early 20th century there were relatively few origami folding techniques but then Akira Yoshizawa (1911-2005) came along who can be considered the father of modern day origami. He developed more than 50 000 new folding patterns and also an international system to depict folding instructions.
I’m not Japanese though but from Germany.
Hello, yes I doo remember :)
These days I am for the most part a silent reader in the Gang of Five froum though.
(BTW, I’m The Anonymous Person from the GOF forums. Dunno if you remember me or not)
I don’t think so.
I think every character in the show is like that…
I’m happy you noticed. Indeed the colors of that blanket were not picked randomly ;)
Lyra is awesome :)
If you like Lyra you may want to check out the Silly Lyra comics by Dori-to to which this scene is a tribute.
That’s an evening well spend, Zaknel :D
Thank you very much, 40kponyguy :)
Thank you very much, imercenary :)
The whole scene is inspired by the “adorableness” (that isn’t a word, is it?) of the Silly Lyra Comics by Dori-to.
Maud Pie perhaps? :D
Thank you very much, edzombie :)
If you enjoy Lyra cuteness I also recommend taking a look at the Silly Lyra Comics by Dori-to to whose work this origami scene is a tribute.
Once one figures out the base folds it is not as difficult as many people think. For example the same base fold as the one I use for the ponies can also be used to fold cranes, dragonflies, owls, elephants, kangaroos, Discord or the Millenium Falcon (to name but a few). It is a rather adictive hobby into which I stumbled almost by chance back in 2015.
Thing with this origami is that it is not a “pure” origami since the mane and the tail of Lyra a printed seperately on adhesive labels and then attached to an origmai base. Here is are tow examples of origamis which come without seperately attached manes and tails: Mane 6 Octavia.
Unfortunately I don’t have a complete folding instruction for the ponies as I fold them at hand but they are based on the so called bird base. Here is how you fold that base: Bird base folding instruction
The ponies then require two cuts to seperate their legs. Do you happen to visit brony conventions in Central Europe? Whenever I am there I offer little workshops to show bronies how to fold origami ponies.
