Meh. If comedy is the aim, he should receive a Cutie Mark at the end of his song.

It would have been pretty darn funny, no mistake there.
 
I doubt it would have been better. Depending on the writing, it would have either added nothing to the story or outright destroyed the message.
 
That said, I do like the idea of Rumble showing up in a future episode with a cutie mark in whatever (cooking, perhaps) and still pursuing his dream of becoming a Wonderbolt and, when asked why, saying that he may be good at this thing, and enjoy doing it, but his life goals are still the same. I feel it would be good long-term reinforcement of this episode’s message.

Rumble is the second Bolt who has a CM of cooking.

Not necessarily… the Wonderbolts could always use a good chef. Plus it worked so well in Under Siege.

That would’ve invalidated everything the CMC said though and make Rumble right.

Yup. I’ll just reiterate that the point is not so much in the getting of a cutie mark, it’s in Rumble’s one-track mind. He’s so concerned he’ll get a cutie mark in anything else because he thinks it will inhibit him from being a Wonderbolt, but the ending is saying that that isn’t true at all. He was limiting himself while preaching ‘freedom’. That’s the irony.

Nah, he didn’t deserve such punishment.

I would have been really annoyed if he’d gotten his mark in anything at the end of the episode, but I’m having trouble articulating why. It’s good enough of a resolution that he realizes how his thinking was flawed and stopped trying to inhibit the others.

The lack of Rumble and Pip earning their cutie marks was a bit of a letdown… didn’t really care about any of the others in the group.

I actually think it’s better this way, if he got his cutie mark then and there for cooking it would have been very forced.

I think he will get a mark in flying, but the point is not putting yourself in a box.
