Actually, when gunpowder weapons were weaker, sometimes they would fire a couple of rounds at it to test it, and if it did not penetrate, keep the dent there. Sometimes decorate the dent in some manner. This was called “proofing”
Before Gunpowder, proofing was also done with crossbows and the like.

You’re not the only one. Kinda wish armor like this was more common in sci-fi. Well, armor similar to articulated sets, but, you get the point.

Well, I knew that, 15th century gear ain’t exactly kevlar and ceramic.
Still, it looks friggin’ awesome, plus I’m pretty sure it inspired one of the Titan armorsets in Destiny.
Really, I said ‘bulletproof’ because that armor makes her look like a walking tank.
Full plate armor wasn’t quite bulletproof, but it was pretty much immune to any muscle-powered weapon that wasn’t a hammer, pick, or mace.
