in fact everyone has a different reaction … I myself enjoyed rainbow rocks but I admit that a lot of eg has contradictions not only with fim but with its sequels that will not change unless they stop “keeping them creatively separated”

What the hell does that have to do with anything I said?
That I put characters above plot and lore doesn’t mean I don’t care about it,

Well now that’s a different story. Before, you said that lore and plot were “not important”. As in, not important at all. But now you indicate that they have some amount of importance. That’s a key distinction.

I do wish the movies/show explored stuff more indepth. I’m not going to let the fact the writers don’t care to color my enjoyment of the characters and setting.

Here’s the thing: I actually like Equestria Girls, and I want to see more cool stuff come of it. I didn’t (and still don’t) think that EqG 1 was a good movie (for reasons beyond just the Sunset plot holes), but Rainbow Rocks genuinely impressed me and made me a believer. Yes, I’m hard on the plot holes and poor writing decisions, but that’s tough love. It’s because I know they can do better than that, and because we shouldn’t have to settle for shoddy writing. Gen4 MLP set a higher standard than that.

That I put characters above plot and lore doesn’t mean I don’t care about it, nor that I wont take author intent into consideration.

I very much like the little magic rules that have formed over the course of four movies.

I’m a person that is of the school of thought that lore and plot are not important.

Well in that case, why even bother discussing what’s canon and what’s not?
MrSeyker

@PonyPon

Basically. FIM has had several instances that made me say “what” over how stuff is supposed to work. Doesn’t mean it suddenly becomes the worst thing that has ever been written.

The unanswered questions about magic in EQG to me are just that. Unanswered.

I’m a person that is of the school of thought that lore and plot are not important. What matters is the characters.

And I enjoy FIM and EQG’s characters very much.

My own interpretation is that Sunset didn’t know shit. She came up with a theory, jumped at the chance to prove it to validate her world view, and turned into a demon because she was wrong.
MrSeyker

@LanceOmikron

Meh. It’s unimportant. It worked, just not the way she thought, and the world is still suffering the consequences and Sunset is still trying to figure things out.

I’m sorry you get so hung up on such a detail. Neither EQG nor FIM have ever sufficiently explained the magic.

I doubt they ever will.

It doesn’t really matter.

Uh, yes. It DOES matter. A lot. Why? Because it’s the single most important plot point in the entire spinoff. The events of all the sequels hinge on the fact that Sunset somehow knew that taking an element of harmony into another world would change the way that it worked.

And yet, this vitally important plot point has gone completely unexplained to this very day. And as far as we know, it’s impossible for Sunset to have known about it. She knows it for absolutely no reason, thus the entire Equestria Girls spinoff series happens for no reason. This is a plot hole, and a completely unacceptable one at that.

Not even the Fall of Sunset Shimmer prequel comic (which I do consider canon) saw fit to give even the smallest throwaway line indicating how Sunset learned it. All it showed was her learning that the mirror was a portal, and that alicorn transformations are possible.

Saying that Sunset made a guess about how the elements worked and was correct due to blind luck is no different than not explaining it at all.

@MrSeyker
when twilight passes through the portal to the human world it is noted that time passes the same for both worlds because the sirens do not?
that the message was not supposed to be the magic of friendship is everywhere? The magic of friendship can be used for the bad,
how sunset. knew that?
If that were the case, could anyone use magic in EG, good or bad, because only certain people are chosen?
So if EG does not respect the established rules of FIM nor does it create its own under what logic is it guided?
we already know that its magic comes from equestria only that each sequel its powers change transformations, instruments, magic objects? without any connection but well …
who cares? - rainbow dash 2014
MrSeyker

@LanceOmikron

It doesn’t really matter.

It might be part of magic theory back in Equestria that Twilight was unfamiliar with (the comics, if you want to consider them, establish that Sunset was intereted in portals and the mirror and studied them behind Celestia’s back).

It could’ve been Sunset making an educated guess based on her studies.

Or she had no idea.

Sunset mocking Twilight for not knowing what was about to happen is meant to be arrogance on Sunset’s part, not some deep understanding about magic theory she had over Twilight.

She was caught off guard by magic’s potential to corrupt just as much as anybody, and has spent some time since then trying (and failing) to come up with an explanation to the rules of magic in the human world.

And the whole fricking plot about the crown is that when taken out of Equestria to a world that doesn’t have magic of its own the established rules that work in Equestria are thrown out the window.

My problem with this is, how could Sunset have possibly known that this was the case? Is she an expert on things that have never ever happened?
MrSeyker

@Background Pony #44D7

None of that is a contradiction.

Rainbow Rocks implies nothing about the sirens’ age and how long they’ve been in the human world. The comics proposed the idea they were sent forward in time, but that has been retconned. An unanswered question does not make a contradiction.

And the whole fricking plot about the crown is that when taken out of Equestria to a world that doesn’t have magic of its own the eatablished rules that work in Equestria are thrown out the window.

And since then its been demonstrated throuh actions that equestrian magic is completely neutral in the human world, and capable of good or evil depending on the person and how prepared or not they are to wield its power.

People with the values of friendship reflect the magic as it is in Equestria, people that don’t get turned monstrous because power corrupts and they were never meant to have magic in the first place.

A set of additional rules doesn’t make a contradiction. Its an expansion on the magic lore, which isn’t even explored in much depth in FIM either. There are vague rules and that’s about it, in both worlds.

The rules just change because its an alternate dimension.

@MrSeyker
they do … they can not agree on how long the dazzlings were banished for 1000 years? but they look young in rainbow rocks it seems they were there a short time
FIM establishes that the elements of the magic of harmony could not be used by mane six and it is used for good, then comes a sunset that was not only able to use magic, but it turned bad
I could also mention that the powers of the mane six change in each sequel but … nah
also apparently the plot of magic in the human world will never close and sunset will not return to equestria because it does not suit them commercially
I really do not care if it is canon but if you insist on keeping them separated creatively I only see more contradictions of both

@IceKitsune
Because people behind the scenes do this sort of thing all the time so they can go back on decisions later rather than just proudly show it is or isn’t canon and fuck anyone who says otherwise. They say one thing and show nothing directly linking them in the product. Leaves it open for them to back away from that decision. In this instance, the Sirens come off as a nod and/or fanservice in that scene. “We made up this story of Starswirl battling the Sirens a thousand years ago in EQG, lets animate that without actually acknowledging them because why not.”
It’s hardly any different than Flash appearing in the series as a guard for the crystal empire. He’s just… there. Nobody says anything, no attention is drawn to him in any special way of significance to the other series, he’s clearly just there as a visual nod to the other series. Nobody jumped up and down to this extent then, that was just mostly standard ‘Flash drama’.

I WANT it to be canon, but it’s hard to think that way if they hardly do anything to show it besides “Look, unacknowledged character on screen for something entirely unrelated!”

@Background Pony #E9DB
Because if it’s canon and they want it to be canon, they’re doing absolutely nothing to show it besides nodding to it. Show, don’t tell.
Or if you do take the ‘tell’ option, have a character mention literally anything of the EQG verse. That finale had the best opportunity so far when they were talking about portals and such for Twilight to simply say “Like the mirror?”.
There’s no reason to dance around it like they are.

Also, Nick Confalone has just become tied with M. A. Larson as my favorite tweeter from the MLP staff.
