Actually, Akira Toriyama said his first name is Mark, which in Japanese is pronounced Ma-a-ku, an anagram of Akuma (devil/demon in japanese)

Actually, Hercule IS is canon first name. The US version simply decided to go with the first name instaed of the last for obvious reason.
I can’t speak for any other versions but the German dub used his last name.

Which made it really hard for any Latin American kid to explain to their parents why people were chanting “Satan, Satan” in a cartoon.
No wonder they changed his name in the US.
