I modded one some time from 2004 - 2006, can confirm. You can now mod them to have much better RGB output, though, and it costs about $55 for the chip.

Its possible to mod the Atari 2600 to display Composite video and even on some earlier consoles, to add in native stereo support (The Atari 2600 was originally gonna have Stereo Speakers built into the console but they mixed it down to Mono at the end to the RF Signal. The earlier games like Combat still had the Stereo sounds in the code which is heard once the Stereo Mod is performed)

Got a cousin half my age that can whoop my butt at EVERYTHING on the last few generations of console, yet go back to the Sega/SNES/N64 and things are very different. >:3
