I wish people would stop comparing Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, MLP and Steven Universe. They’re tangibly similar, but still have massive differences in genre, intended tone, purpose and style.
They’re all extremely popular so they all must have their qualities, but which particular qualities you prefer depends heavily on your personal tastes.
Here’s a big shock: most people are not big fans of reboots.
There’s a number of reasons: The entertainment industry is out of ideas, making easy grabs for money and attention in order to stay profitable and relevant, we live in an age where there’s so much competition for entertainment so no one wants to take risks, etc. I get all of that. And yet every time there’s a reboot, we always have this conversation about whether or not people are being too hard on it because they’re “manchildren blinded by nostalgia” and blah blah blah.
But as far as I’m concerned, a reboot is essentially guaranteed money and attention. And for most of those reboots, the studios are mainly trying to appeal to fans that already have seen the original.
So when I hear people in the entertainment industry telling fans of the original to let go of their nostalgia, my response is “You first.”
