Bingo. It even happened with MLP too. From what I recall, I think Faust mentioned focusing more on Slice of Life episodes due to both money reasons and because a lot of the writers and other staff of FiM worked on other comedy shows.

Reminder that in 2011 or somewhere around that time they did an even grittier reboot of Thundercats and it was animated. It died after one season.

There’s a little more to that. Action cartoons cost more to produce than comedies, and that’s why they’re dependent on merchandise in order to survive. It’s one of the reasons why Young Justice got cancelled. They toyline was a bit of a mess, and was discontinued no thanks to Mattel. No funding equals no show. This also ties into the issue Lauren mentioned with kids being more into Apps, and they can get their action fix from video games or movies.

There’s also the problem that studios don’t really seem to care about original programming as much either. I mean, Lauren herself ended up doing MLP because Hasbro was impressed enough with her ideas to hire her, but only after turning down the original concept she was pitching to them. And it’s not impossible to understand their reluctance. Rebooting an older show with some degree of nostalgia means you pretty much instantly have an audience of people who will buy toys and figures and other stuff like that, as opposed to taking a risk on something that might flop completely. But at the same time you end up with a stagnant environment in which people with their own ideas end up having to take shows that they often can’t do too much with without upsetting people.

And that attitude is why animation can never really grow past it’s ‘for kids only’ stigma.
 
It’s just bizarre because Gravity Falls demonstrated that you could balance good serialised storytelling and character work with humour. OK, it’s not really an action show, I suppose, but it was popular because it respected the intelligence of its audiences and rewarded their intense scrutiny of its secrets with great payoffs. And despite its wacky scheduling I’m glad they respected the wishes of Alex Hirsch to finish the story on his terms (and the scheduling can at least be explained by the two-season length and Disney wanting to hang on to something special for longer).
 
Actually, with shows like Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Ducktales, Disney seems to be the one company that’s holding the torch for these kinds of shows.
