Geez what a simplistic view of seeing things. The animation on all of those shows are more complex than a generic face. It’s like saying that japanese animation has been following the same trend for years and nobody has ever complained about it.

Funnily enough I found myself listening to a video essay on Bloodborne and the Souls series (well really, all of From Software’s content) at the beginning of my shift tonight and there’s a part where it segwayed into the culminating effects something as big and successful Dark Souls had on the game industry. Which is to say: everyone began producing Dark Souls-likes while entirely missing the point of the games. All derivatives are weak and shit, since they’re a misuse of the original philosophy as interpreted through the lens of get-rich-quick wave riders.
 
Likewise to tie this into a similar essay by the same lad about why Bethesda is bad and the entire scope of the real issue in the video game world is that what this comes down to is consumption. While I’m sure the lot of us here in the comments channel won’t be actual consumers of this style - at least through official, rated and observed and approved means - there are people who will and may not be as critical. Old fans might be righteously upset because nostalgia plays into a big part of how we behave in these situations, but we’re also a rather separate entity which deviates from the original point I was starting this paragraph on; so much for pre-bed stream of consciousness.
 
But to try and make a point, I think it might be a good things for us and if we care for the art, for it by learning tonsit back and take it in critically and engage the wider consumer field and encourage them to take a critical work. To re-tie in theis to the previous point, it’s not enough to complain about Skyrim re-release number 40,000 or studios not paying their employees if you’re not doing anything else, which is to more publically discuss it outside of the accepted interested areas as an effort to encourage the artistic and literary criticism of the thing to encourage the producers to take what is presently the more riskier endeavor of experimenting or having any sort of ethical or artistic standard.
 
Or just don’t consime such images.
 
I’ll admit all my TV and cartoon consumption is down to pony and Aggretsuko now (out of curiosity) so I don’t really give the entire thing much thought and my non-consumption of the thing makes any sort of claim by me that I am critical of thing a non-factor because I wasn’t intending to engage it anyways. The best I can do at this point is throw out some words with the intention of a perspective and hope it sticks.
 
Ultimate, saying it’s bad and shouldn’t be a thing because it’s bad and saying it only to people who won’t engage in the thing because you all agree it’s bad isn’t going to change it. It’s not really actively attacking the system which produces this. You’ll have to somehow change the position of those who will unthinkingly engage it so they can be critically of it as you. This however poses the issue of a hurdle: if by protesting this, how and why did we come to believe in protesting the style as bad?

Problem is too many shows look the same. I mean, it’s not an original problem; you could take screencaps from two dozen late 80s and 90s action cartoons and be hard pressed to tell them apart.
 
But, this style really isn’t all that appealing in the first place; everyone looks goofy or silly or funny. And that’s fine if you’re doing a comedy, but not so much for what was a serious action-adventure show.

So, you’re not the star of the show?

That’s my other gripe. Action-driven western cartoons aren’t really as big a thing as they used to be.

I’m almost inclined to say perhaps it’s a bit hypocritical to slam this reboot considering MLP is also a reboot that is demonstrably different from its original incarnation.  
But… Well, that preview looked ass. It’s just doing that big-headed noodly arm balloon animal style that seems to be extremely as of recent. The reboot of MLP aimed to elevate the source material, this just looks like it’s trying to cash in on current trends and name recognition.  
But, who knows, it might actually turn out to be a decent show in its own right. Though I’m really starting to miss the action oriented cartoons that use to be so prominent. Is it too much to ask for a few explosions and sword fights that aren’t followed up by five minutes of fart jokes and incoherent screaming?

This is what you get for accepting the increasing commodization of your entertainment. What first sells good shall forever be copy pasted across all things to achieve maximum profit. An unquestioning faith in the arcitecture to produce good always for good reasons is a poor thing to believe in.

I can understand market realities. It just sucks a bit when styles become so homogenised. MLP is pretty commercial stuff obviously, but it still manages to look distinctive and punch above its weight animation-wise.
 
Sure, this show could have some good writing, but it also seems like animation is moving towards a certain kind of high-octane wackiness that sacrifices long-form storytelling for mile-a-minute jokes. It makes shows begin to FEEL the same as well.

I think it’s because a few shows with this general style (namely Gravity Falls, The Amazing World of Gumball, Steven Universe, and Teen Titans Go) got extremely popular (whether for good reasons or not), so a lot of marketers and executives are probably assuming that they can make a show successful by giving it this art style.
 
A lot of shows in the late 1990s (IIRC) wound up looking similar because a few shows with the same general style (like Rugrats, for example) became very popular. This isn’t something that hasn’t happened before and probably will continue to happen for decades to come.

That’s how the industry is. You play by the industry execs rules or poof, no food on the table or a place to live.  
And we’re taught to believe passion and creativity in the arts is alive in the industry, not that both are automatically thrown out because some dudes in suits don’t see potential profit in it.
