Actually, looking at the rest of the series, the Equestrian soldiers have been rather useless. The Changelings easily overwhelmed them, Tirek bested them easily, and now in the movie the Storm King’s forces took them down without fail. Even in the last season they don’t seem to have improved, as Sombra single handedly defeated them. This is what happens when you rely on Celestia and Luna to handle all the threats.
@redweasel
It kinda contradicts some episodes too, especially the “Cutie Re-mark” where in an alternative timeline, Celestia & the Equestria citizens are shown to have an army, and are able to match combat skills with Sombra’s army. Of course that’s a different timeline.
Plus, with all the armed royal guards everywhere in Canterlot, and such that would imply they’d have some kinda military. Even IRL pacifist nations do.
to be fair, the movie did a really bad job of illustrating how the pony’s happy fluffy innocence made them worse at combat than the storm guard. they didn’t even have twilight try to teleport, and everyone else was as powerless and helpless as princess celestia. they were trying to show that ponies were easily conquered due to their lack of military training, but they should’ve had the ponies do some epic fighting, and still fail because they’re tactical morons. twilight teleporting right into a magic proof cage, for instance. but instead, ponies got nerfed, because it was convenient to the plot. even a friendship huggy pink heart hippie kingdom wouldn’t have failed that hard.
The Equestrian army. As I’ve said, they were useless whenever Equestria was invaded.
The Storm King’s forces took who’s them down without fail?

Princess of Explosions probably didn’t survive long.
