Oh, she’s definitely powerful, no question. I suppose part of why some characters being more powerful than others hasn’t bothered me is because real life does work that way. Talents and skills aren’t created equal.
 
I have seen some in this comment section treat OP as having no reason to be as powerful as is the case. What do you think?

While the reverse is technically true, look at what starlight has done  
Her cutie mark based magic is something that has not only never been done before, twilight, who rivals starlight outright attempted it, and failed  
And in the mlp universe, the cutie mark is who you are, everything about you. And starlight stripped all of the mane six of thier powers and individuality all at once  
She outright mindraped the mane six (bar twilight ) in every little thing she does  
And while it didn’t actually accomplish anything, banishing discord’s physical body is something that I believe the alicorns are incapable of (without the elements of harmony)  
It’s an incredible feat in and of itself

She’s definitely not a bad character. And I’ve started believing that if she’s OP, so is every unicorn/alicorn with a magic-based cutie mark. I mean, the average unicorn has a limited means of using magic, so in comparison, Twilight, Starlight, Starswirl, and the rest of the princesses are OP. Just as she can do magic that other alicorns haven’t done, the reverse is also true. You’ll really get a believer out of me if Starlight raises the sun or moon herself.

I judge op based of the standards of the universe as a whole. This is how most people define OP  
and compared to most characters in her universe, starlight is most certainly op  
regularly doing things that not even alicorns can do  
but like I said, even though starlight is op, that doesn’t make her a bad character

I suppose I define OP differently from most- more powerful than prior knowledge of the character would indicate, or something like that. If Starlight were as powerful as she is without actually practicing, then I’d agree. And I think much of the hate against OP characters comes a bit from jealousy and a “bucket-of-crabs” mentality.

but she has way to many feats to NOT be considered a little OP by mlp standards

I’ve got to ask myself that question: is the counter actually relevant? And the only Starlight that I think is legitimately overpowered is Forga Lorga’s. And that Starlight is entertaining. As for Mary Sue, no. Not even if that term meant anything anymore.

It didn’t harm discord, and it certainly didn’t accomplish it’s purpose  
She basically built this enormous roadblock, discord just gave her the middle finger, and walked around it  
I admit, I DO agree with the consensus that starlight is overpowered {not necessarily mary sue, but a little op} But I do not believe she is at discord or tirek’s level of power

I love how people are whining about starlight being overpowered and even being more powerful than discord, when this whole scene accomplished literally nothing. He kept being a pest and terrorizing the school anyways

Correction: lifting the sun is the height of Starswirl’s abilities, and it takes a team. This is nowhere near that.

From the Starlight haters: pessimism and buzzwords. And citations for rule violations. Nothing cogent to be found. One glaring error from Lumino: failure to consider context, possibly due to not have watched episodes. Strong unicorns exist, e.g. Starswirl, whom Twilight is said to be almost as powerful as. Unicorns have never been stated to have an upper limit to their power. That’s the stuff of headcanons.

I feel like even if he learned his lesson, he just wanted an excuse to wreck havoc. Which is what he does, since he’s Discord.

Although he did fall back onto some of his old habits in this particular episode, he has been learning and growing as a whole. It’s not unlike the case with Fluttershy; she’s definitely made significant progress since season one, but she hasn’t completely rid herself of shyness either. As such, occasionally freezing up in fear does not indicate she’s acting OOC; it simply means her path to overcoming shyness is still an ongoing process. And much like Fluttershy and her shyness, Discord overcoming his egotistical tendencies isn’t something that can happen overnight. It takes time.

He isn’t learning anything, he is flanderised. That is all fault of the writer. It’s no longer in his character, just like it isn’t in cahracter for Fluttershy to become paralised or panicking because of shyness.

And I think you didn’t read my comment. When did ever say Discord was trying to be helpful? Antagonizing the students is of course uncalled for, but that’s just the kind of person Discord is. He has never been one to take other’s feelings into account. Heck, even around Fluttershy he sometimes loses awareness of his surroundings (e.g. accidentally flooding her cottage in “Discordant Harmony”). I will admit I was somewhat disappointed with him going back to his childish ways after having a more toned down portrayal in his latest episodes, but just because he does re-enter that mindset to a certain extent does not mean he is acting out of character.

I think you completely miss the point of the episode. Discord didn’t try to be helpfull. He was messing up on purpose to piss off Starlight. This is why he is OOC. THis petty revenge is not worth antagonising and hurting everyone else in the school, Mane6, Fluttershy and Spike. If he was trying to do better but being incompetent in doing good things it would be a different episode alltogether. This one just regressed him to his self from S4 that didn’t cared for anyone and could easily betray ponies to cause havoc.
