Starlight did say her magic was linked to her emotions. Perhaps friendship has given her more powerful emotions to work with.

Why did they choose to do this? It’s the worst

Starlight’s magical power was always great, but under Twilight’s tutelage she’s gathered a great deal of magical knowledge as well. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that she’s grown even stronger.
