Always happy to discuss the finer points of pony evolution. Not much of an amateur scientist, but I can at least logic a few things out based on how Earth’s own animals and species evolved. Bright colors are nearly always a warning in nature here, after all. And, as for brown?
 
Hot chocolate, a cool winter night, a heavy blanket and a crackling fire. Despite its color, brown is the comfiest. An excellent color choice, not to mention a cute cat to draw inspiration from!

Memes are only memes and jokes when you don’t apply science to them. Of course, that also brings this meme to mind:  

 
Though to continue on that ‘evolved due to biological defense’ theory, that would also offer credence to the amount of sugar ponies consume. High-energy individuals with access to magic would probably require very high caloric intake in order to sustain themselves. Pinkie Pie would likely be the outlier on that front, considiering just how packed full of sweets and energy she is.
 
But could that convert itself into a logical defense? Sugar intake can be dangerous in high quantities if the body isn’t designed to handle it - I’ll assume here that ponies do have the ability to properly handle such sugar without developing an insulin resistance -, but diabetes can often take a very long time to contract, at least Type 2. Type 1, you’re born with, but I doubt every predator on Equus/Gaia/whatever Equestria’s world is named has Type 1 diabetes. So, what would that translate to?
 
Could they be converting all that garbage material from their food into a toxin of some kind? Would ponies have evolved such that they no longer have that poisonous content, but maintained the colors as a kind of ‘bluff’ defense?

Aye, but just criticizing because it’s ‘too colorful’? That kind of misses the point of MLP, it’s supposed to be colorful. Hell, it’s a marvel of evolution and biological engineering for them to have such varied, bright colors. Maybe it worked like bright colors and designs on poisonous frogs, where ponies evolved them so predators would take it as a warning for poisons?
 
Maybe ponies are so sweet you immediately die from diabetes?

That’s what I think. Some colors don’t go together and some colors are a bit too harsh for the human eye to look at. In those case, it makes a lot of sense for a person to change the color of their OC.

You’d think colors would be a subject of critique when they don’t compliment each other, like neon pink and lightning blue. Colors that more make an OC actually physically painful to look at, or just aren’t biologically possible.
 
I’d figure canon shows the upper limits of what a character’s design could really be, since the character designers do restrain themselves to logical colors. Celestia and Luna stand on the outer edge of that, where they should be.
 
Granted, you could also be quite creative with painful colors, but the design and background should accompany that.

They are. I’m fond of rusty reddish browns and lighy creamy color browns.

Yeah. While some peoples critiques of OCs can help the creator make their OC better themselves as artists, sometimes people go a bit too far with it and it can get into petty peer pressure territory.

Didn’t think they were that common, though. Darn. Kinda takes away the magic of monochrome OCs like this being ‘unique’ :p.

They’re actually quite common. Some fans do it to match actual equine coat colors while others unfortunately feel pressured to make them because some of their peers bash more colorful OCs (I wish I was making this up but it’s true in some circles).

Huh, and here I thought all-brown OCs were actually pretty rare. First time I’ve come across one that wasn’t mine. She looks pretty nice!
