Milk is a complicated commodity that yields negative profits without massive government subsidies.

I apologize for wanting a clear discussion instead of a shouting match where everyone is talking about different things. I yield to your superior percentages of zero.

Having worked in manufacturing, that 10% of the cost is really REALLY expensive.
True for larger and more complicated commodities. But not necessarily everything else manufactured. You could stamp out tin cups by a the thousands, but they’re not going to be any more expensive to produce than a BMW. But since we’re dealing with percentages, the fact that something is more labor intensive and materially expensive doesn’t change the situation: that ninety percent of a luxury product’s end market value - that being at the store - is still 90 (or 99) percent the force of its brand and name recognition.

  1. What “larger and more complicated commodities” are you talking about?

  2. Tesla Motors produces “luxury products” but took over 10 years to report its first quarterly profit, even with its ‘brand and name recognition’… which didn’t really matter cause they ended that year with a loss anyway.

Saw some $750 Prada sneakers earlier. I would be very surprised if they were significantly better than sneakers at a regular shoe store.
