This show has serious regression issues. I guess that’s going to be a problem with how they keep hiring writers to work on one or two episodes out the blue

Repeat after me: There is nothing wrong or inconsistent about writing a character as a hypocrite.
 
This is a perfect example of a double standard, because while Twilight doesn’t care about sports or the great outdoors, trivia is something that she, as a nerd, takes personally. She’s willing to lecture other ponies about things that are unimportant to her, and then go against her principles when it comes to her own hobbies and obsessions.

My point was that people have been using “It’s a kids show!” to dismiss inconsistent/poor writing since day one.
 
Just because it’s a kids show doesn’t mean you can’t except consistancy and continuity, and my comment about Jim Miller is because as the director it’s his job to make sure characters don’t have to relearn lessons they learned in Season 1/2.

Twilight was kinda worst pony for 2 straight episodes (forcing rd into something she wanted nothing to do with and this.)

thing is, this kind of double standard is entirely in-character for twilight. she’s always been full of shit this way. she always preaches what she doesn’t practice. she’ll hop up on her soapbox and chew someone out for doing the same kind of shit she thinks nothing of doing. she’ll expect people to forgive others on her behalf but then refuse entirely to forgive others on someone else’s behalf. she’ll jerk rainbow dash around to “teach them a lesson” but then be entirely offended when discord jerks her around to “teach her a lesson”. she’s always used her ocd and overreactions as an excuse to do the kind of things she admonishes others for doing. she’s always seen herself as some kind of moral authority and never once considered that she constantly does things that are as bad as the people she judges as amoral.
 
with all that in mind, what was wrong with this writing? it seems to me she was acting 100% in character as established in previous episodes, and that she was written spot-on. now, you could criticize that she never gets called out for this double standard in-universe, but that’s a series-long thing that isn’t restricted to just this one episode.
