Jumping ship? As if, I’m overwhelmingly disappointed with S8/9 and I’m here til the end, and I don’t just mean the show.  
They’ll have to pry the fandom from my cold dead hands.

And the weird thing is, they COULD of set this up well, but they instead chose to portray Twilight throughout the series as the least wise/only book smart, the least interested in friendship among the six, and the most interested in disregarding her attachments if it meant simply following Celestia’s orders. Heck, in the theater movie, this is the main drive of her character that messes things up for the protagonists.
 
This is so off its painful. So…it kind of fits right in with the last few seasons that caused a ton of fans to jump ship. :/

But then there’s the past 1000 years. Did all the villains not exist prior to the mane 6?  
Celestia is always trying to pull the strings and guide ponies but we don’t exactly have an abundance of her or Luna stepping up and saving the day when things get rough.
 
The problem is that the writing being there to have the mane 6 save the day results in ponies who are basically the gods of the sun and the moon frequently being shown as incapable. You can write them as wanting to have their ponies protect Equestria when needed without them getting knocked out or captured every time a villain shows up.
 
Then it all gets capped off with a pocket watch that makes Luna and Celestia’s entire talent meaningless, and passing the crown off to a pony who is still an unstable mess at times and expecting her to rule alone.

You answered your own question. Princesses should have been the background of events, and first seasons have done this quite good. Chrysalis in S2 was actually cunning, devious and dangerous enemy, so I don’t really cont this as fuckup for the Sisters.

Celestia and Luna have always had a hard time actually stepping up to deal with problems.  
I realize the goal is to make situations where Twilight and her friends have to save the day, but having the princesses fall flat on their face every season is frustrating, especially with this being the end result.

How and why? Simple. Celestia was more than capable leader for over a millennium, judging by the seasons 1,2 and 3. Then suddenly this season makes Celestia seem like a useless laughing stock with Luna as dull sidekick. And then voila: she is retiring! Luna just returned after 1000 years of banishment to her domain, for right to rule which she fought with her own sister for crying out loud! But guess what? She is completely OK with the retirement!  
All the season 9 was painting Twilight as incompetent, emotionally and mentally unstable person that somehow has forgotten almost every lesson she seemingly already learned by the course of the past 8(eight!)seasons. And Poof! the Sisters leave their hard earned and created country to her. That’s book case of retcon and a shitty one to boot.  
All the season nine is like a spit in a face.

What the hay? She’s the mane character I get it but c’mon are why gonna Mary Sue her till the very end?

My issue regarding this specifically is that Luna and Celestia never should be retiring to begin with.  
Celestia was a great leader and Luna is finally getting the appreciation she deserves.  
Twilight should have been a leader alongside them, not replacing them, it’s just silly.

Celestia and Luna are still alive, right?
