I think it’s a bit beyond Spike being the 7th element.

I wished the Royal Sisters were included in the final rainbow laser.  
They wielded the Elements before and their cutie marks were on the tree of harmony. The fact they weren’t included just adds salt to the wound that the sisters are screwed when they lose their connection to the Elements.
 
It was a miracle and a surprise Spike actually got included in the laser for once.  
Probably the closest we could get for him being the 7th element.

I know some complain about the dues-ex rainbow coming back, but truthfully, it’s impressive & unexpected the heroes summoned it without the elements, or anything besides each other. So frankly, I don’t mind it, and it was satisfying to see, especially sense they haven’t relied on it for quite awhile.
