I was wondering this myself. Maybe it’s that while Changelings can assume more powerful/larger forms, they can’t keep them as long as, say, the form of another pony?
Finally, someone figured it out!
Yeah, if I am being honest I have to say that Starswirl has been kinda underwhelming in the show with the exception of his flexing his power in the Everfree scene. Past that I, personally, was very let down by how him and the pillars were handled.
I get that they needed to be jobbed for plot sake but they could have at least given Tirek a struggle. Tirek isn’t just a brute, he is a pretty smart dude so they could have played up the idea that the Pillars were greater than Tirek but he outsmarted them, kinda like how Twilight vs Tirek was handled with him holding her friends hostage.
I think it would have been great if he had planned for them and their battle and preemptively found and captured Stygian first.
But I digress a bit off topic. Unicorn Magic just seems to be as powerful or as weak as the plot demands. Same with Changeling Shape Shifting.
And yet Starswirl couldn’t bother to use any of that power on Tirek and got curb stomped in 40 seconds flat.
It’d be ironic if the well-fed neo-changelings/changedlings were better at transformation than the stunted, love-starved black changelings.
I suppose there’s also the possibility that they can’t sustain these mega-forms for very long. Just long enough to dispose of a rogue chimera, for example, then they have to recuperate. That wouldn’t be enough to conquer much.
I would argue Unicorn Magic is the ultimate McGuffin just below Friendship Magic. For example, Starswirl has shown himself to be unbelievably powerful when the show called for it. Example being things like dealing with the Everfree Forest’s Discord Vines, he cut through them effortlessly and stated that before the Tree of Harmony he handled the forest. Remember that Twilight and Co struggled to handle the forest and Twilight is one of the most talented magical unicorns.
Then you have Starlight and her absurd magical talent to the point she was able to re-write a Starswirl spell to time travel fully compared to Twilight’s 30 seconds way back when.
I would say that pure magic would trump changelings shape shifting power though Changelings are indeed strong.
@PoemeMystique
Easier to feed on love when no one suspects you are among them than to conquer, especially when Equestria is known to have super weapons like the Elements of Harmony on their side. Having the strength of their forms is one thing, having the ability to blend in is even more dangerous that brute strength.
If the ordinary ones can do this, not just Chryssi, yes. It makes it absurd that they didn’t conquer Equestria ages ago, just by shapeshifting into a numberless legion of invincible battle-mode bodies.
That sounds more like someone’s personal fanfic/self imposed ideas. Its a work of magic… Not to mention Chrysalis basically proves this wrong in the show with how she turned into a massive Croc which easily tore through the ice of a frozen lake with its greater weight followed by turning into a giant bird for stronger flying.
Pretty sure their shape shifting is more magically enhanced than redistribution of mass.
Conservation of masss SHOULD apply. (Ever wonder why Changelings have holes in them? It’s to increase density (sturdiness and strenght) across the body by shifting matter around. But they have the same amount of body mass as a pony.
If somebody kicked that giant’s leg they’d be in for a surprise as it’d most likely snap like a twig.
Presumably. It’s a plot hole. Best not to think about it.
I mean isn’t that true with all changlings?
