Incoming attempt to guess the scale by comparison to the size of ponies.
Or vice-versa?

Well, since you tempted me…

There was an article on EQD from around 2014 analysing the size of a pony, which suggest around 3ft seven inches if I remember rightly. Whilst the analysis video is gone, an image using the ‘Apple scale’ (comparing the size of apples to Applejack (Of course!)) suggests a height of around 3ft six inches if we assume apples are the same size as in real life. Another analysis using the 8ft candy cane seen in ‘Hearth’s Warming Eve’ arrives at a measurement of around 4ft.

The show itself seems to back up the 4ft theory with the police line up from Pinkie Pride:

So, assuming this lineup is in standard ft measurements, we can see that a ponies hoof would be roughly six inches at its widest point.

Comparing the hoof of Coal Dust here with the boxcar, it does seem as if the door side edge is the same length as his hoof is wide, 6inches. A quick google search tells me that a standard HO scale boxcar from Bachmann is 7.5inches long. Roughly trying to work out the height here it appears a tiny bit smaller than a hood, measuring from track height to roof top, I’m going to say somewhere are 5ft height wise. Referring back to the humble Bachmann boxcar, the height is said to be 3.4inches. So in a weird twist, it’s both too short yet too tall at the same time to be HO scale. As a comparison, a Lionel O gauge boxcar is said to be 10 inches long, so here it would be too short.

Of course, this is pretty much speculation, and of course, the drawing isn’t meant to be used as a technically accurate source. And most importantly, it’s best not to take this explanation too seriously! :P

So where does this leave us, gauge wise?

In my opinion, there could be two possible gauges, though they are both narrow gauge (Well, one is technically ‘minimum’ gauge, but that’s a story for another day!) whereas of course I’m fairly certain the boxcar seen here is meant to be of a standard gauge design, though I do believe narrow gauge variants do exist in both the U.S and regions of Canada? You’ll have to excuse my lack of ‘railroading’ knowledge, I was born and raised in an ‘LMS’ family!

The first: 0-16.5 Gauge! (Sometimes referred to as ‘Oe’)
This uses 0 scale, but the trains run on 00 gauge track, representing somewhere in the region of a 2ft prototype.

Using this ‘The Glass Coach’ kit from Smallbrook Studios as an example, it is 13cm long, just over 5inch. It’s height is relatively low though compared to my earlier estimates, standing at roughly 2.5inches.

So not quite, but slightly possible.

The second option (And one I have a soft spot for) Gn15 Gauge!

Like 0-16.5 this uses 00 gauge track, but working in G scale, giving a rough gauge of 15inches scale wise. Whilst rolling stock is not necessarily long, it does have quite a bit of height to it. Leading to some rather ‘toy train’ like designs. A Smallbrook ‘Katie’ as an example, standing at roughly 3 inches tall:

And for anyone curious as to how dinky the real engine is!

For anyone curious, minimum gauge was an experiment by Sir Arthur Heywood to design the largest practical train on the smallest gauge, settling on 15 inches. A Google of ‘Duffield Bank Railway’ will show the large set up he had in his back garden in the late 1800s/early 1900s, including a four berth sleeping car, an eight seater dining car (With working kitchen!), stations, tunnels, and even a trestle viaduct!

But back to the subject here…

Gn15 also has a somewhat wacky ‘sub gauge’ for lack of a better term. This is termed ‘Emmet Gn15’ by some, for it’s based on the illustrations of Rowland Emmet and his Far Tottering and Oysterbeach Railway. The designs are as incredibly outrageous and top heavy, just like the drawings they’re based on. As an example, a Smallbrook ‘Firefly’ loco kit in ‘Emmet Gn15’:

You think that looks odd? Go look at the original drawings on Google!

The gauge doesn’t quite have the length, again short stock, but it certainly has the height. Firefly here measures roughly 7.75inches high!

So, to sum up.

It’s a little hard to tell, and in all honesty I’m fairly certain showing a specific gauge in the above image was the furthest thing from CoalDust’s mind whilst drawing it. But from the little evidence I’ve looked at, I’d be happy to guess at it either being unintentionally narrow gauge, or something with wonderfully cartoony over sized bodies on the rolling stock.

And thus concludes my impromptu Monday night seminar titled ‘What is that possible gauge and why have I overanalysed it so?’

Class dismissed! :P

And remember, model railway responsibly!

Quick side note CoalDust! Please don’t take offence to this, just me being silly and overworking my brain as usual. No offence or mockery intended!

@ABronyAccount
honestly that’s a good question…. maybe O scale??? S??? its too large to be HO and small to be G sooooo…. some where in between. hind sight I should have drawn it smaller seeing as i tend to gravitate more towards HO and N.
