Her canon was atrociously bad, bland and worst yet stupid. Fluffle started alright, but grew kinda stale for me over time since not much interesting was going on.  
So I think I’ll side with this:

Many people also liked canon and how they handled the show. Chances are the majority of people are in that group and you hear what many like to call the “vocal minority”.
Many fanons are nothing but a bunch of headcanons of stuff written by older audiences FOR older audiences.
And most villain headcanons from Nightmare Moon and Sunset Shimmer are lame victimization fanons anyway.

The one thing I liked about Starlight’s backstory is the idea that sometimes ponies break bad for incredibly petty reasons. That episode about meeting her dad really inspired HCs about just why she broke bad: my interpretation is that not only did the adults in her life not take her feelings of separation seriously but the advice they gave her was totally useless, so she learned to ignore everything they said.

Because it kinda was. Her backstory was really forced, and nearly undermined her entire character. Regardless, she was a very interesting villain when she was first introduced, even though, she didn’t yet have a backstory.
