IRL, yes. Some horses are very bright, some less so, and some if left to their own devices will gorge themselves to the point of becoming bloated and forming an indigestible solid mass of food in their bellies, occasionally requiring surgery to prevent them from dying.
 
Supposedly fresh alfalfa is most commonly involved, or, if a horse has wandered into a farm field where they are trying to grow them, the tops of peanut plants–which are apparently noticeably high in sugar.
 
Cartoon ponies are fun. IRL horses can at times be… not exactly the sharpest crayons in the box that is the animal kingdom, and keeping them from killing themselves can be a full time job.
