I’m summing it up as overrated because that’s the most concise way to evaluate the story’s position, and it’s completely valid.

This is pretty much a product of its circumstances. My Little Dashie enjoy(ed) widespread popularity and is fondly remembered because it was an early-fandom fanfic that happened to be the first story satisfying the kind of wish-fulfillment role it catered to. It didn’t need to be a particularly good story to succeed because bars were very low at the time, especially for ‘firsts’ in specific concept fanfic slots, and My Little Dashie benefited from this. A lot. It got spread around because it happened to hit popular fandom news venues (eg. Equestria Daily) and a lot of people read it. People also tend to remember the earliest parts of an era they were involved with very nostalgically - you know. “Things were better in my day” and all that.

But if you actually read it and look at it against the state of MLP fanfic now, it’s pretty clear that it hasn’t held up well. The story has a lot of problems that are easily made by beginning writers but tend to be pretty clear to experienced authors. If it was written and released today, it would likely receive only a very limited viewership because it wouldn’t attract any real attention due to being nothing special, and would only get a very mediocre vote ratio.

So yes, it is a story whose rating is, as a product of its circumstances, much higher than its actual quality would merit.

As I opened with, the concise way to say this is: It is a very overrated fanfic.

Why can’t you think of a more original thing to say instead of just parroting what other trolls say? “X is overrated” is the most overused and least valid critique ever conceived. It doesn’t make look smart if that’s what you’re trying to do.
