at best the comics are a different timeline so the two ideas can still work

Well the comics ARE canon in that they are licensed by Hasbro. They are their own canon that is separate from the show. The show is canon within the comics, but the comics aren’t canon within the show, so similar to Star Wars, which has different canons coming out its ears.  
Equestria Girls is similar. They’ve been careful that the events of EG never affect the main canon.

@CardStock I’d rather take EqG than the comics. At least the next movie looks bearable. I’ve pretty much lost all hope for the mainline comics at this point.

Comic isn’t canon. Just saying. Nothing from the comics has influenced the show at all. Being licensed by Hasbro doesn’t make it canon. I mean I’ve seen merchandise of Doctor Whooves that calls him by that name which was licensed by Hasbro and yet that’s still not his official name.
 
Plus if the comic is canon, the Equestria Girls definitely is, after all we have seen Flash Sentry actually appear in the show twice now. What influence on the show have the comics had?
