As far as I know the name comes from ThingPone Story by WriteLurker. She identifies the mare she assimilated in the second chapter, which is called Part 1.

Of course her appearance is the most commonly consistent thing about her. Even though she can easily change her appearance at will, that’s the appearance most commonly associated with her.

Yeah, not sure if Amber was a common thingpone name, but the style, shape and tentacles / fangs match.
 
I know of 2 stories that did use Amber as a name (Derpi search function is superior. All praise tags). Mature, so read at own risk

Yeah. Ponies (even the quadruple ones in the show) are anthropomorphic in the sense that they’re given speech, human-like intelligence, and complex socio-economic backgrounds.

Very long time. My headcanon is that Amber is the name of the first pony that thing fused to. The thing was basically lobotomized from a very long trip in stasis through space and had to use the brain of the first sapient being it found to replace what it lost so it basically took the identity and part of the personality of Amber.
 
In effect Amber is like 60% of Thingpone’s personality and being. At least in this interpretation.

Has for a while. I remember in one of the stories Amber was the name of the pony she assimilated and she’s posing as her.
