Only happened to catch them on a rewatch of Flurry of Emotions… and given the mass of other dragon designs in the show, this feels like they either plans from S7 for this, or pulled back from S9 into S7 for the design.

Holy shit, you’re actually citing episodes for once! But the thing is that not only is it agreed within the fandom that “Molt Down” was one of the best episodes of season eight, but Spike didn’t have six seasons of development. He didn’t start getting development until season three.

No, Josh Haber has no capacity for continuity in regards to spike, otherwise he wouldn’t have made such trashfire episodes such as sweet and smoky (making up facts about dragons that never existed before and don’t exist afterwards), molt down (giving spike a “character growth” which does nothing and continues to treat him like garbage once the episode is over), or father knows beast (dragon quest, but not only has Spike backpedaled 6 seasons of progress, now the mane 6 are also incredibly incompetent).
