I haven't seen the Jonah and the Whale cartoon except reading it in scripture, but I'm definitely aware of the origins of vore. Vore has been dominant in many cartoons in the past, heavily impacted in 90's cartoons the most ranging from Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, various Disney cartoons, (specifically those with anthros in them) and even in video games. That's what definitely sparked the vore and furry community we see today. Heck there's a literal boss fight in FFXIV where the opponent is Cerberus and one of the mechanics to defeating him is to shrink down and let him swallow you down, fighting enemy mobs inside and damaging his stomach. The first Banjo and Kazooie also loved the vore approach too.
